View Full Version : Have you guys received '"the stare"?

You know, the stare that you get when driving and when you make a mistake, then the guy from behind catches up to you and gives you the I-hope-that-you-crash-and-die stare. I found a simply solution to that, just blow them a kiss and they get really irritated, I love it.

One stare that I'll remember maybe for the rest of my life (because it was so horrid) was when I was getting out of a plaza and I didn't see this car coming but I stopped before I went anywhere near her and this *female dog* gave me the stare as if I had killed their family members; she just kept on staring at me thoughout the whole way. She was a young women and I thought that I could not get traumatized by anyone just by a stare. Ruined my whole day.

Anyone had those stares?

Seeing as you're located at Ryerson, you should try that move the next time you're driving along the church and Wellesley area and make a mistake.

Haha "The Stare"!

Happens to me all the time. Not because I drive bad, but because other people on the road drive bad and I honk at them. =D Makes my day

Maybe she thought you were hot?

She could have been lonely and probably saw this happen in so many chick flicks. Guy and Girl meet in some random event, fall in love, live happily ever after.

Can't blame a girl for being lonely ;) Or watching too many chick flicks.

...you're definitely not from the area if you don't know...

The good thing is that if you did the stare in the Church and Wellesley area, it'll be the last time you'll ever do the stare...

OP it sounds like you have been on the receiving end of alot of these stares.
Does that not tell you something about your driving skills? PAY ATTENTION when you are on the road.
Nowadays, with the cellphones, blackberries, drunk drivers etc...too many people are NOT paying attention on the road.
Personally, I'm glad you've been getting 'the stare' and that your day was ruined by the stare. Let this be a warning to you and you'll smarten up next time.

I got a stare from some douche bag that was rubber necking at a red light where a minor fender bender occurred. The thing is, we sat there for a good 20-30 seconds prior to the light change but this dipstick didn't have enough time to absorb the scene or some thing and I just had to wake his dumbass up. He then stared at me through the rear view mirror for another 5 seconds before he found his gas pedal.

Whata dick!

i was thinking the same thing.

people who don't bother looking, and i see them about to merge into traffic right in front of me, oblivious to the speed of on-coming vehicles, they deserve 'the stare'--you are not the only vehicle on the road, respect others! this is particularly bad when i'm on my motorcycle.

i don't know if the op was guilty of this in particular, but based on his description, it sounds like it. i gave a long stare to this soccer mom just yesterday, because she was creeping her obese suv through a two-way stop sign, as i was coming the other way into the intersection. she finally stopped rolling when she realized i wasn't going to ignore the fact that i had the right of way--i gave the stare and the "wtf" look.

she totally earned it, and she was paid in full

When I get the stare after I honk at someone for something stupid they did, or if they try to get aggressive, I reach over and grab one of these (http://www.radioscan.co.uk/images/airband-scanners.gif) that I have nearby, and pretend to talk into it. They then think I'm a cop, and quickly take their stare back and bugger off

Except once, when some idiot took so long to make a right hand turn, the person behind him in the other lane 50 meters back caught up to him i was pretty much in his lane and almost got into a head on collision because i was trying to turn into stupid guy's lane.

True, though some people make many many more mistakes than other people do. It sounds like you get these stares way to often if you have developed a strategy for them.

Basically, the main strategy should be don't **** up!. Seriously, bad drivers are not just an annoyance, they risk the lives of me and the people I love, make me late for work, and risk damaging my car.

If you get the stare and it was because you made a mistake, just sit there and take it, maybe make apologetic expressions. You deserve it if you messed up. If it is just a person being a duche, and you didn't do anything wrong, just give them the finger.

One time I got weird stares and plenty of flashing lights. I didnt know what was wrong... It was broad day light so my day time running lights were okay, I didnt forget to turn off a signal, no cops in sight. So i pulled over... While i was pulling over the slight lane change caused a bunch of oranges flew off the roof!

Oranges everywhere. It was like an orange massacre.
I forgot a bag of oranges on my roof while i was fiddling with my groceries in the backseat.

You are as bad as the OP.....

Check your mirrors and also shoulder check. The person you hit was driving in their own lane. You are completely at fault.

Better yet, please both of you stay off the roads. Or learn how to use your necks and turn your heads.

I believe that I am very conscious in my driving. I'll admit that I speed a lot (avg 120km/h in hwy) .I zig-zag through highway and there's always someone doing that same thing behind me.
I've seem people texting while driving on the highway and even a guy using his bong while on the highway, so considering that, I am not that bad.

I usually look at bad driver to make up a profile of these bad/extremely-slow drivers; NO OFFENSE TO ALL, they are old white men, various types of women (too big selection to categorize) and Chinese.

Lol...I remember an incident where I gave someone "the stare" back at Vaughan Mills. I was entering the mall from the Hwy 400 Northbound entrance, and some guy in a minivan was CLEARLY heading the wrong way, right in our direction (this is not 2 way traffic, there is only lanes multiple lanes, all of which are suppose to be for cars going the way I am; if you've entered Vaughan Mills through the 400 Northbound, you'll know what I'm talking about). It wasn't just my car that was entering mall from that way as there was quite a few other cars behind and beside me also (good thing everyone was just going slow). I gave the dude the "errr, wtf?" stare to which the driver of the minivan responded with the "ohh....woops..." look on his face.

A girl sitting in the passenger front seat just had the "shame" face on and just did a facepalm:lol:. Albeit, it was a bit cold of me to do it in that scenario:o.

I had another incident at Dixie Mall in the parking lot where I got into a stare down with someone else.

I was driving towards the exit, when someone came out of the parking rows right in front of me. I give him a honk and a stare, to which he just stops the car right in front of me (he hasn't even fully made his turn, half his car is in my "lane" and right before me, while the other part of his car is still in the parking row he came out of). He looks right back at me, stares, and mouths "wtf do you want" to me and gives me a fist, as if he wants to fight me. I retaliated with the hand motion to "come over here and try" (I admit this was stupid of me, but I wasn't having the best of days and this guy wasn't helping). The guy just ends up looking away and drives off (not that I was really expecting him to do anything else).

Sometimes when I am driving on a road with light traffic and I see a driver driving really slow on the fast lane (way under the speed limit), I would be forced to cut him/her... usually at that point I would give a quick stare at the other driver. It won't be a hostile stare, but just a quick look to let him/her know that they shouldn't be driving on that lane.

What really drives me nuts is "the honk". When you are turning from a side street to a large street or turning left on a intersection. Sometimes the person behind you would be impatient and try to honk you to make you go (regardless of whether it is safe to do so). Usually when you finally make the turn, the driver will make the turn too and pass you immediately while giving you "the stare". You see, that really piss me off. Since I happen to drive a sports car, usually that that moment, I will give them a "STFU" by shifting down a gear and scare the crap out of them with my engine and speed. Knowing that they have been owned, they would usually stop staring immediately.

ohh, you reminded me of a crazy thing that happened to me when I was driving in Hamilton.
The highway was closed off and traffic everywhere was packed. I was driving down a lane and turning right at the signal and I had made a slow turn because I was amazed at how many cars were there and then I hear like 3 cars honking at me because the other side signal turned on. I just started laughing out of embarrassment but one guy went crazy.
He pulled down his window and started yelling and swearing at me. I just kept on laughing and then he took shirt off. I thought that he was coming to attack because our cars weren't moving (traffic was packed) I grabbed a pen so I can probably stab him in defense and prayed to God that he won't come.
Right there, he became completely calm. No hate at all in his face. I am like WTF? Just randomly quiet.
And then we both went our ways.

Funny! I have received the stare as a passenger!!!

The driver in the car I was in cut a guy off accidentally. The other car, changed lanes and drove up beside us, and the driver of that car looked MAD AS HELL with a drop-dead stare, looking directly at me (passenger window). I mentioned to the driver of the car I was in that I thought he cut this guy off, and the driver stated, matter of fact 'No I didn't!'

Knowing otherwise (as I watch the side-view mirror even as a passenger), I opened my window and yelled out "I'm SORRY!" and put my hand up in a gesture of thanks (for understanding.)

Unbelievable how the anger just melted off the angry drivers face, and he kinda smiled and actually looked surprised he got an apology.

Wow... I wouldnt do the stare @ all... I'd do the "i better gtfo outta here" look since this guy is probably drunk.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

I for one am tired of threads about drivers whining about how they were tailgated in the passing lane, getting stares from other drivers for mistakes and so forth . How about you respond by acknowledging your mistake with an apologetic wave or nod? and the love of god don't go and post how you got a stare or tailgated by another driver for your poor driving.

Do the right thing and accept your responsibility.

When I make left turns I position my car fairly aggressively, so that's it's more left than most people do it. It's for multiple reasons (better field of vision for me and the other left-turner opposite of me, won't get rear-ended into oncoming traffic).

I do that even when I'm second-in-line, so my car ends up being more left than the one in front of me. The problem is sometimes people think I'm going to cut them off, so they inch their car a bit ahead (which, to be honest, makes things easier and more correct).

In any case, one time this one guy thought I was going to cut him off, sticks his head out the window, and flips the bird.

To which I react by gesturing that he has the right-of-way, and I had no intention of not letting him go first.

IMMEDIATELY the guy gives me a sheepish grin, and a semi-embarassed apology. It was actually quite humorous..I think when I gestured to him, he realized that I was never going to cut him off, and it really wasn't that big a deal anyways.

I position myself the same way, but make sure I turn my wheels straight again. This should really be taught in drivers ed. Wouldn't have to wait so damn long at left turns bc people can't see.

they do teach that. They taught me that.

Yup, I learned the S-turn at Young Drivers. Since very few drivers do it, I imagine that it is not taught at many schools though.

I give the stare but have never received it. If you get stared at frequently for a bad driving, time to go back to driving school.

The reason I was not scared in the situation was because everyone was going slowly, and as that van approached the cars that were going in the same direction as me, it was slowing down to a complete stop. However, I do get what you mean.

Yea, I asked the instructor about this dilemma and then he taught me it. Otherwise, I don't think that he would have taught me.

I'd imagine they're cautious that people may not be able to do it. They may go too far initially, disturbing opposing traffic.

Then again, if you can't do it, GTFO the road.
