View Full Version : Carpet from Home Depot?

Hello all,

I’ve been looking at replacing the carpet in my upstairs bedrooms, hall and stairway. After traipsing from store to store, I found something I like --- surprisingly, at Home Depot. I’d planned to go with one of the local flooring dealers, but Home Depot has the carpet I like best, and of course, the price looks good.

I’ve read about folks having bad experiences with HD installing carpet, and I’m the first one to advise others to use their local dealers, but it just so happens that I can only find this carpet at HD and like I said, the price is great.

So I'm just wondering whether anyone here has had carpet installed by HD --- particularly in York Region --- and if so, were they satisfied with the result? If not, what were the issues? I’d really appreciate any experiences y’all might share.

I had some bedroom carpeting installed by HD. It was more expensive then going to a carpeting store/installer but I used the don't pay for 1 year on the credit card.

The seems were horrible though, and the installation shoddy. We used a professional installer to do some other rooms and they showed us about 5 things HD did that were just totally lazy.

Depends on how much the quality matters. If it's in a basement or room not really used that much I'm sure HD would be fine. Otherwise I'd seek out a professional installer.

I'm not in York though, so can't help you there.

Not knowing any better at the time, when i moved into my first house 5 years ago. i used HD to replace the butt ugly carpet that the previous owners had on the stairs to the upper level and the upper level itself. I bought a high quality carpet, and spent a fortune.

The install sucks! I bought from the Ajax HD, and don't know who they sub-contract out to, but i need to get someone in here to stretch the carpet and lay it again. It's rippling all over the place.

I've replaced carpet in every place I've moved into, and never had a problem like this. But then, I bought from small local places every other time.

Is there any way to have HD just deliver what you want and get a reputable company to install? There is some guy on Homestars that is highly recommended. I've been thinking about hiring him to fix my carpet. Sorry, can't remember the name off hand, but start looking through the highest rated carpet installers and you'll find him.

Just a couple of weeks ago we found a good deal at Lowe's. We ordered the measure and had their contractor come out to measure the upstairs. It was the same guy we had gotten from Home Depot 4 years ago. I just told him to leave as his installers made a mess of my family room.

I am sure that any carpet store in your area can get the carpet you want, and will come darn close to PMing HD. Our local Carpet Barn did.

I used HD for our basement reno. The installers from the Oshawa store did a great job with the carpet. My only complaint with buying from HD is the timing/ process. It'll take about 6 weeks from the time you go to the store by the time someone arranges to come out to measure, they get the measurements to HD, they order the carpet and the installer comes out.

There was a disconnect between the person measuring and installer as they didn't note that the drycore needed to be screwed down for carpet so the installers came then had to come back after I screwed down the perimeter of the drycore panels for stretching.

From a price perspective HD was cheaper than the competition for our project as I found one of their samples with an old price (about 80 cents cheaper/ sqft then current price) that they had to honour then tagged on a 10% off coupon. I was turned off when visting some of the local installers as they provided little supporting information on their products just asked us to "feel" the quality rather than showing spec sheets which are readily available at big box stores and big flooring centres.

The experiences of Rhill03, Indebted, and 3Weddings is exactly what I am worried about.

I doubt I’m competent enough to get my own installer. I would have to be sure of my own measuring (to order enough carpet), and I’m not, plus I’m a working single mom and doubt I could be organized enough not to end up with huge rolls of carpet in my front hall for weeks on end. The mere thought is overwhelming.

As for the price difference, it’s about $1,500, and my local dealer appears to have no interest in meeting the price. They say their carpet is better quality --- it’s their house brand, so I can’t truly compare --- but I’ve done my homework and see no difference in the quality of the carpet itself.

Oh well. Guess I’ll just wait and save up my money.

Thanks for sharing your experiences! :)

Price was very expensive.

Disposal fee was outrageous.

Cheaper alternatives out ther - unless HD is having a big sale.

I used Chungking carpets in Scarborough - the job was done very well and their price was quite good.

Again, thanks for sharing. Obviously, this is not what I wanted to hear, but I do appreciate hearing it anyway.

Home Depot doesn't use their own employees to do this type of stuff, they contract it out.

Like anything, sometimes they will suck, sometimes they will be fine. Depends on the guy doing the job.

Used HD twice and once went elsewhere. Had same installer for basement and for mstr bedrm, hall, stairs on two levels and another hallway. Install went well and quick. Had no issues and we bought carpet that was a promo deal, with free install, free pad, and free carpet cleaning for 3yrs. Price was untouchable!

Can't you just buy the carpet from HD and have it installed by others?

I had my entire basement done (from scratch, it was just concrete) and I thought the job they did was just fine. It was a hell of a lot cheaper than the local guys and we got the 'don't pay for 1 year' on top of it all.

Granted it was done only 2 or 3 months ago and it isn't exactly a high traffic area in my home, I'm happy with the results. I ordered from HD at Woodbine and Hwy 7 and it was installed in Thornhill Woods.

Sure you can, but why bother when other places give you a better all-in-price?

How are you going to move rolls of carpet - especially when doing a whole house!

Yep... they don't do their own installs. My experience with them was pretty good though. The contractor they sent out was great. The price was cheaper than other places locally (I didn't have access to any contractor discounts). This is in Vancouver.

Disposal was expensive, so I had to do it myself. It was actually a good thing because I was able to screw down the floors to remove squeaks before the guy came to install.
