5 Free appliances if I purchased a home with them , which I did. I'm sure that these appliances are just OK (avarage if not lower). What should I do If I wanted to upgrade to a better quality appliance. How can I get more value from the store if they only give me credit for the wholesale price of these free ones?

Standard 5 appliances - real cost to the builder is about $3,000 - $3,500 range. Most GTA builders deal with Appliance Canada and if your builder does deal with Appliance Canada, then you can still upgrade the appliances and the increment cost will be paid by you. The increment cost is simply the showroom retail price what Appliance Canada sells at. Builders do not get involve with any upgrade items costing.

Our builder offered 3 pieces of kitchen appliances. If we wanted to upgrade them to stainless steel which would cost $1300. If we upgrade, we still would have gotten the top/bottom fridge instead of side by side. In our offer, we stated we wanted the stainless steel dishwasher, range and side by side fridge. They accepted the offer (along with all our other ones).
