Looking for a plant to tuck in beside my fireplace, possibly a fern. Plant store I was at wasn't the best help. It doesn't get much direct sunlight in this spot.
Any ideas on what could survive and not easily die?

Spathiphyllum or Peace Lily. Easy to grow, tolerant of lower light levels, doesn't much mind if you forget watering to the point where it wilts, it'll bounce back.

Good choice for the spot. Downside is that it's toxic and the OP said that they were looking for something "hearty"...

my only piece of advice is don't get a fern - most of them like the humidity (they do awesome in bathrooms), so right next to a fireplace wouldn't be a good home for a fern :)

Thanks for posting that!!! I had no idea. I have a cat who plays with (possibly eats) the leaves of mine. That's it for that plant.

I don't know if it's toxic to cats...

Thanks! picked up a giant one from CT for $10, transplanted it...only concern is it was pretty wet so hopefully it'll be okay with that.
