I wonder what kept her with him for so long: extreme fear/paranoia or Stockholm syndrome...
From OP article:
Asked by reporters why the parole officer, who had visited Garrido's home, had never found Dugard or the secret backyard compound, authorities said it was well hidden behind a fence, vegetation and a tarpaulin.

Such a disturbing story.
Somebody needs to find his house on bing maps so we can see the 'compound'.

4. Anything.
Almost a year before Elizabeth Smart was found, there was a 7 year old girl named Erica Pratt who was kidnapped, bound with duct tape around her arms, legs and eyes, and left in the basement of a building:
Did she lie back and take it? Hell no. She broke a window, gnawed through her duct tape, and escaped. She was back home the next day before her parents could enjoy the solitude of having one less kid around, and she's only 7 years old.
Plucky girl, she is. :)

Oh man, If I was the Dad of that girl, now that I know who the kidnapper iss, I can't even begin to describe the world of hurt and the beating I would lay on that man...Pedophiles are the worst scum of the earth...

..very sad story :(
Scenario question:
If the father goes into the jail and kills the abductor... would he get FULL SENTENCE? I know many people think that... but I don’t think no one ever asked this question before

Anecdotally, there's a hierarchy/ranking of what makes for a really bad crime in prisons (funny, I know). With all the crimes a prisoner could do, the crime of pedophilia persistently ranks as the lowest of the lowest crimes.
That said, if the man is put in prison, placing him with the general prison population rather in isolation/solitude will bring justice, prison-style.
To a degree, it's an ugly picture to paint, but some things take care of themselves in prison.
Edit: That aside, a slightly bigger concern is the result of his crimes on the abductee - the children. Two kids in their teens, stuck in a shack for their entire lives up to this point. No doctors, no friends, just a yard and shack. I can't even begin to fathom how they've dealt with this :|...

It's on HLN news right now, the place doesn't look like anything different than a normal house...lol. The couple was just arraigned in the last hour and both have pled not guilty. Oddly enough the print on the screen says "Suspect calls 18 year abduction 'heartwarming'"....yeah right!

That, by far, is the worst.
Though to be honest, being the worst is not a goal that one should work towards. Worst or slightly bad, this entire batch of crime is horrendous.
One part of me wants to know why people feel the need to steal someone's life like this. But the rest of me says that I rather have no part in knowing what goes on in the minds of the twisted.

battered person syndrome
she probably started to feel something for this guy
people get trained like pets/dogs to behave a certain way, after awhile it becomes habit

from those google maps, this guy had a huge backyard.... I can see why the prison cell was so isolated and hidden all the way into the back with several tents. The neighbours found it suspicious with all those tents, but it's too bad they didn't call the cops (not enough reason or facts).

It also could be having a case of Mind Your Own Business (MYOB).
Or maybe the area has it's own version of "Don't Snitch".

It did say in the article that a neighbour did report to the cops that he was psychotic and had children in the yard.
The cops did come visit him, but only at the front door, and nothing further. Cops did a poor job of investigating further, seeing that he had a prior criminal record.

The most disturbing thing is that I'm sure this isn't the last one. I bet right now, there are tens (if not hundreds) of people in her situation right now waiting to be discovered who have been hidden for at least a decade.

according to news reports... Neighbours have reported strange activity in the background and even alluded to "kids living in tents".
Apparently police didn't perform a thorough check at the time.

There is no way in hell the two kids and the once kid now mother will EVER live a normal life. I'm sure they would be moved into a mental institution. For sure the mother will be. I guess it really depends on how they see their mental status.
Sad.

I don't agree. Some people have gone through really bad situations similar to this and have lived a normal life. It depends on the person and how they deal with the situation.
Some fare well and others don't.
Really sick man to have done this - should be locked away for life.

When I was in high school, I had a lot of south asian friends who were abused by their parents at home regularly. they turned out ok. but its only been 8 yrs since. Who knows how they'll be 20 yrs from now

I'm a big fan of the don't snitch way of thinking, but when it comes to stuff like this, I know if I had any suspicions this is where I'd make an exception!

I find it ironic that they found Furqan Muhammad-Haroon after his "kidnapping" one day before said inividual was found... some 19 yrs after she was actually kidnapped.
That guy should be ashamed of himself.

I guess it depends on a lot of things. I don't know if people who overcome these horrors forget about them or are there is just something in their makeup that triumphs over it.
It's hard to say. Some people are stronger than others or able to move on somehow.
That's not to put down some people, because these are very serious issues.

But unfortunately a rapist only gets jail time in the western world. I am more happy with the idea of death penalty for rapists. Then ill see how many rapists would like to take the risk of raping someone
But that's just MY opinion. I am sure there are other people, who even if their own family members were raped, would sit quietly in a court room to have the man jailed. A very weak punishment imo.

The worst part about this story is that this man was put away for life in 1977 and was granted early release in 1988!! I think some responsibility should fall on those who decided to let this man out of prison.
