With the above plasma attachment like this? Any idea on the cost? Any advice on a cost effective way to achieve this look?

If you're handy or know someone who is, it's rather simple to build yourself. It's pretty much flat pieces of wood with trim.

If you notice closely you'll see that its actually the same fireplace underneith as the one above... I think that the person just cut abit of the depth off ithe top one so it looked recessed.

Very nice idea and looks nice. Makes me think that I might head down to HD and pick up two fireplace mantel kits and do the same.

If you do go ahead please be sure to post it here...It does look pretty simple but then again I was hoping I can find it ready made in the stain similar to the one in the picture.

The top and bottom half are not the same unit - for example, the bottom half has two stacked panels on each side (just look behind the plant to the left of the fire box). The point, though, is you could - with some custom adapting - achieve a very similar look. If you want this exact look, go to a fireplace shop and start talking with experts and it might give you enough information to point you to the right source. I doubt you'd find anything like this at Home Depot

Although not my cuppa, it is a tastefully designed unit and I understand the attraction.

Good luck with your search.

Lee Valley has a great book on mantels. Bunch of different designs and all the plans to make one.

Could provide advice if you were going to copy this design.

A mantel is on my list of future projects.

Would this be a project for girl who has the minimum experience and no cutting tools? Basically can I buy pre-cut peices and make something like this? I’m really liking the looks of this but one quote I received so far is for $1000 and it’s made out of MDF. A quick question, the mantel on the picture, it’s made of some sort of wood right not MDF? If it is wood what type?

Looks beautiful, but painfully high to watch.

Actually our plasma is currently installed this high on the walls and no problems so far. We've also had it installed this high in our previous condo for 2 years. :)
