Hi all I have a question about home address change.

So basically i just sold my house (the closing date was August 25th, 2009), however i wouldn't be moving into my new purchased house until September 15th. So in the meantime, i'm currently living in my uncle's place for about 3 weeks.

I was just wondering whether i will need to change my address now to my uncle's then change it again to my new address after 3 weeks?

i'm worried that the car insurance, driver's licenses, and OHIP might be a problem, any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

I would call your insurance companies at the very minimum with your temporary address and arrange for your permanent address change as well. You want to be sure you and all your belongings are covered in case something happens. Leave driver's license and OHIP and old address until you take possession of new home.

i'm just wondering if we have some sort of time frame (say within 30days of move that we must notify ministry of change of address?

just change it when you move into the new place.. and get canada post to hold your mail or something

You must notify them of your new address immediately, however, you cannot notify them in advance.... very twisted. Because you don't enough to do on the day you move?

yes, however my concern is, since i'm living temporary in my uncle's place until i move to my new permanent address in less than 3 weeks, would i have to switch my auto insurance address (driver's licenses and etc) to my uncle's address for 3 weeks, then AGAIN change in 3 weeks when i move to my place permanently.

no, they normally don't care. I left mine unchanged (to my determent becuase when I changed them my premium went down) for months.

i'm moving from downtown to north york, do you think my premium will go down as a result of this move?

I wouldn't change to your uncle's address if it's only for 3 weeks. There's no legal requirement that I'm aware of to change your address by a deadline date. However, make sure your utilities and hydro providers are aware of exactly the day when you move out of your old house and when you move in to your new house so billing cutoffs (not to mention making sure you have electricity in your new house!) are handled properly.

Also, watch out for unscrupulous people knocking on the door the 1st week after moving into your new house asking you to sign up for gas or hydro. You should've already pre-arranged it (as I suggested in previous paragraph) and there's no need to sign up for anything. So, do not sign or agree to anything from these folks.

I would also call or go to the Canada Post website and make sure all mail under you and your family's names are re-directed to your uncle's house and then in 3 weeks change to your new house's address. Canada Post will charge you for this service, but it's definitely worth it because you can't be sure that you've changed all your addresses. Go for 1 year. I recall 1 years of re-direct service was about $60.

Actually, there is. From the MTO website (http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/faq/driver.shtml#addresschange): When do I need to change my address on my driver's licence and vehicle permit?

By law, drivers and vehicle/plate owners are required to advise the ministry within six days of the address being changed.

I would call the MTO and explain the situation and see what they say. Make sure to get the name of the person you spoke to.

Enforcing 6 day deadline is virtually impossible - the only way how big brother can know that OP does not live at address they have is if police knocks his door but in this case he will have something much more important to worry about. Setting mail forwarding with canada post should be enough for small gap like this.

Good to know but I agree with pshch. I checked and the specific law is stated in subsection 9(2) of the HTA but it doesn't state any penalities if violated so it's toothless. And then it goes on to say in subsection (4) to change the address by registered mail!

It appears the real intent of this law is not for it to be used to directly charge someone with the crime of omission (otherwise it would have some teeth), but rather that should something else happen where the required information is sent to an old address resulting in you violating another law with teeth (say, did not renew license), they can point to this subsection to say that the onus was on you to change the address witin 6 days.

i just called the MTO, it's basically a 'suggested' deadline, just in case they might have documents mailed to you during the period when you are not at the registered address.

the guy at MTO said as long as i have the mail redirection service from canadapost then i should be fine.

If none of these are coming up for a renewal in the next 60-90 days you will not receive any notices from them .

Anyways get Canada Post to hold your mail for you for 3 weeks instead of re-directing to your uncle's place then again back to your new address .

After 3 weeks contact OHIP , Insurance , DL etc and change your address .

You can even change your address at most self-serve kiosks placed in malls.
