View Full Version : Found hidden bag of bloody clothes...

So....I don't quite now what to think about this...
I've had some foundation guys doing work down in the crawlspace of my building for about 3 weeks..they finished yesterday and as they were leaving they informed me...
"Hey, by the way...we didn't want to get involved but we found a garbage bag buried in the dirt underneath some wood that had a jacket and some gloves that were just covered in blood...lots and lots of blood....but we threw it out as we didn't want to get involved with the cops...."
My first reaction is "wow, you guys are stupid, that could have been important" followed by rationalizations that there could be many reasons someone would decide to hide a bag of bloody clothes in a crawlspace....
So...the "evidence" of course is long gone....so is this even worth mentioning to the cops? I never even saw this stuff but it's kind of weirding me out...

Sounds SO sketchy. Why would they tell you and expect it to be on the DL? If they have nothing to do with the "crime," why would they not want to let the police know?

I suppose I get some enjoyment when I see a topic go multi-page...if I think it's providing insight or information or a level of humour that is...
This did happen....and I am wondering how to proceed here and thought it was interesting enough to share.

If it really did happen, that would put you in a tough situation. If you call the cops, they will question those guys for sure which means that you baited them out. Could that cause some problem for OP down the road?
If he doesn't inform the police, he's letting a "crime" go unsolved forever.
VERY TOUGH indeed...
OP, which area are you in? I don't want to be insensitive but if OP is in Toronto, could it be related to the abduction? Could that lead to the case being solved? Just a thought that popped into my head...

Actually the story is believeable. I work with a lot of contractors before and they do a lot of stupid stuff like this. If they call the cops, there will be an investigation on-site. This really means to contractors that they have to stop work and still pay their workers. Contractors are cheap, and always find the easiest way to do things.
I had an incident where we found large bones while digging in a backyard (for remediation of the site). Luckily, we were there or else they would have thrown it out without us knowing. P.s. It turned out that it was pig bones.

I would call the cops, obviously not 911.
If it was a glove or something small.. probably just a previous home owner or the original contractor that buried it. Since these are pretty big items, generally that means something serious happened.
I could care less if the contractors are questioned by the cops. What if is tied to something serious? They now commited a crime by tossing the bag!

Exactly, call the cops.
The contractors threw it out, but what if someone finds it and it somehow gets traced back to you? Also, if you call the cops, that's one way of finding out whether or not the contractor is a "joking kind of guy".
But one way of not handling it properly? Posting on RFD. 1/3 of the people won't believe you, a 1/3 will believe you, and the other 1/3 will derail the topic and send it off into the RFD nether regions.
The right thing to do is call the cops, you haven't done anything wrong if you report it quickly enough.

wouldn't a bag of bloody clothes any more than a couple days old be all dried up or full of maggots? If it was dried up, nobody would just call it bloody clothes, it would just look dirty.

I would call a bag of old bloody clothes exactly that...I can tell the difference between old blood and dirt...are you saying most people couldn't?

wouldn't a bag of bloody clothes any more than a couple days old be all dried up or full of maggots? the bloody bag of clothes would definitely be dried up....depending on how much blood there is. So it definitely wouldn't be a wet bloody bag of clothes.
Maggots are attracted to rotting/dying flesh and tissue. Not blood. So you wouldn't get any maggots or insects.

Blood usually dries up and turns dark on clothing.

Provide them with the name and number of the contractor. The police will take it from there...
This could be nothing, could be related to a major crime.
Who knows, there could be bodies under your building right now. It is just up the street from a major cemetary, after all...

Dried blood is brownish, muddy clothes and old bloody clothes could be easily confused. I don't think many people would think blood before dirt.

I don't know why you are posting here and asking a bunch of strangers. Call the police and ask them. If it nothing, they won't bother coming out. But you already know that they won't think it is nothing and will come out and investigate. Call them asap.

You should probably call the cops. If the workers were joking they can tell the cops. If they weren't joking the cops might be able to find some kind of evidence that was left even though the bag was removed. Maybe they can even find the bag before it ends up gone forever...who knows.
Think about it this way...if someone is waiting for some kind of closure for a cold case and this evidence would break it open wouldn't you feel pretty bad knowing you couldn't help them because you "didn't want to get involved with the cops"? That's a little selfish imo. You never know, it might be nothing but it might be something.

FYI - the evidence is not "gone". If there really was a bunch of bloody clothes in your crawlspace, there would be DNA *everywhere*.
Unless whoever it was washed the whole area with bleach, it would be trivial to find the blood stain and extract DNA from it.
Have you never seen CSI? It is not always realistic, but that part is, I can assure you.

I saw an episode of some TV show where they showed how its possible to trace where garbage has gone. Every garbage route has specifically assigned trucks. They just have to find out what shift did that block that day. They trace it back to the dump where garbage is dumped then trace it down to which part of the land fill according to the truck.
If it was a private garbage company it might be easier because there's less trucks.

I can't even believe the OP is mulling this one over.
If you truly believe the contractors were on the level than you need to call the contractor and put his feet to the flames as to whether he was messing with you.
If he wasn't, I would strongly advise calling the police. We can only speculate what those clothes were doing there, and if it's from a crime, this could be crucial for closing a cold case or something.

That's just craapy/scarry.
I'm sure the police could track down the supposed garbage bag at the dumpster.
If it is maybe part of some crime or not I would surely feel guilty not reporting it because it c ould somehow help solve something-even years later or decades later because of science.
Maybe someone if this really did happen will report it to police eventually.
I actually had a strange bag of clothing left on the back patio of my building last year, some shoes and a garbage bag of stuff-the police came by to pick it up and do whatever with it.
They were glad i called as there are a lot of break in in my area and the builders here told me people break into the construction project beside here a lot......
so maybe it helped someone.

There are some people who call the police for stupid reasons. Now people are overcompensating for this and think that they're wasting a police department's time when things are perfectly valid to investigate.

So wait you don't even know where this bag is anymore? Aside from the laughs--creepy/scary stuff. Personally I'd be really interested in finding the bag and getting it to the police and find out if it's crucial evidence in some crime(s). However that's based on TV shows like CSI and Cold Case. I'm sure in real life the cops would just do what the contractor did--throw it out because they don't want to deal with it.

QFT. I called in a complaint once because my neighbors (young 20 something drug dealers) were on their front lawn during a party fighting with other people and trying to sell guns to other people at the party)
Police came like 4 hours later and just knocked on the door and told them to keep it quiet. They were gone from the scene after no more than 5 minutes.

ah yeah... I'm a volunteer Firefighter and on my way to becoming a paramedic.. I deal with them almost daily.
