Maybe a silly question but will broach the subject anyways...
our pool at our new house is a "sport" model and is 3 ft shallow end and 5 ft deep end inground.
it is a liner type pool, can the liner be removed and the pool made deeper without spending the same amount as putting in a new pool?
I always wanted a diving board!!
Thanks

In theory, yes, this can be done for less than the cost of a new pool. I had a colleague who looked into this and never pulled the trigger - "too complicated", he felt. I would imagine that you'd get the advantage of the filter, pump, piping, heater, steel walls, and concrete apron around the pool (if this is indeed how it's made) but deep digging is typically done with big backhoes and the need to keep these intact means some pretty careful excavation - it's possible that this is exacting and time consuming (translation: expensive) but it's also possible that it's quite straightforward depending on the circumstances of your site.
By the way, I have a friend who put a smaller pool that fit entirely within the old pool's "envelope" and the second pool costed about the same as the first one. There were special circumstances involved, though, so it wasn't an entirely fair comparison.
Personally, I think it would be worthwhile to call in a couple of local pool companies and get their assessment. And share your findings back here - it's a very interesting question.

Wow, unless you factored the cost of deepening the pool into your house purchase, it would seem like a huge expense.
I imagine your looking at ~ $15k as the whole supporting structure would need to be changed as well. I wouldn't be suprised if the cost was slightly less than a new build.
