were getting rogers for our house and are going with the basic package an the SD digital box.

With that said, is it wise to rent or buy the box? Only reason I was thinking of renting because of the short life span some electronics have these days.

If I should buy, what is the average price of the SD box, and what are some good places to buy from, or should I just buy it from rogers?

Future Shop/Best Buy on are the main places I know of that sell them. The odd time they go on-sale, but probably not the SD units. Only seen the HD boxes on sale.

I own 2 HD boxes and rent 1. Haven't had any issues with them, so I'm looking at buying the 3rd so I don't have to pay the constant rental fee every month. At $15/month, after a years time it's nearly paid for itself.

The SD boxes are cheaper though and depending on which package you have, may even be free.

If you are looking for the SD box. Try the Source. We basically got ours for free. It lists around $99 and $49. Picked it up at $49 plus programming credit which was applied to our bill. The regular boxes are usually fine. It's the PVRs that can be trouble because of the hard drives in them.

Just call the retention department/customer service at Rogers and say that you are planning to go with Bell or Rogers. Bell currently is offerring a free HD PVR for a year, or maybe 2, and you want to see if Rogers could offer the same. I did it, and got 2 years free HD PVR.

There is a whole thread dedicated to this somewhere. Look under forums > hot topics.
