Anyone been successful in this? I'm currently trying with my BNS reps, but I expect them to want me to put in the $3500 minimum for waived fees that I really feel uncomfortable doing with the lack of interest payments on it...

unless u have been there for like 10-20 years and/or have significant investment with them, there is no chance. If you just want the 10k scene pts, just put the 3500 there for 3 months...

But I only have a Visa with them (closed my accounts this year when I turned 19 and they wanted to charge for a student account), I get free banking at Meridian, TD, etc.

Length of relationship means nothing. Like angel wing said, they'll look at it from a profit point of view. The number of products you have and type of products. Also the potential of selling future products to you.
What your family doesn't matter as much either, since it's unlikely they'd pull their accounts because you didn't get an account fee waived. Scotia One doesn't sound like a product that's suited for you.

I'm probably the only 19-year-old university student with a half-decent savings account balance AND who writes cheques on a weekly basis.

I got offered it for free for a year out of the blue with a phone call from them (our mortgage is with Scotia but nothing else) about 3 weeks ago?
Turned it down as I have no use for it whatsoever. Everything Scotia One offers i get with PCF,. And PCF has free cheques, Scotia One does not even have that. Plus it is only for a year.
Also the scotia ATMs around here are in places I never drive by.

yip, the scotia one is crappy without the cheques, its funny how u cant waive the fee on the value account...i guess it is to prevent abuse.

Very few young people I know still write cheques monthly let alone weekly. I'd definitely look into another account that provides free cheques at the rate you burn through them.
