Do you know if RBC and/or TD Bank have this service for free? I am looking in Montreal, thanks. Their websites don't say anything...

The banks don't offer this service as far as I know.
I have seen the machines in some grocery stores in my area.

Look like only a few locations in Ontario have them.

How cranky do tellers get if you just bring in a jar of loose change? I don't think I have a full roll's worth of anything, but I have a bunch of change I'd love to get off my hands.

They have some coinstar machines at certain TD and Loblaws. Doesn't it take 10% of your money though?

They have a "coins for cash" machine at Canadian Tire here in Calgary. It does however take 12.9% for a service fee. Not worth it unless you have several thousand pennies and nickles.

The TD ones don't. I believe the grocery store ones do!
If need be i would use the grocery store coins under quarters but for anything else I roll my own. A 1/4'd 8.5X11 makes good rolling papers.

My mother used to be a teller and I got the impression from her that they don't take change unless it's rolled, which is why they will give you free wrappers and such.

We will at our discretion give you free wrappers, but it is not a requirement for us to do so. Also, you can bring in loose coin upto a full roll. Perhaps that is the best punishment for a teller, bring in 49 pennies, 39 nickels, 39 quarters, 24 loonies, and 24 toonies. Make em count all that, lol...
As for coin counters at TD they don't charge you. They print out a receipt and then you can give it to the teller to either deposit in your account or get cash back. But you should have an account at the FI.
