Hello

I have been monitoring my internet usage lately and by mid month I already have the "You have exceeded the 60GB maximum usage 100%" message that Rogers sends you if you over exceed that limit. $2 per extra GB is charged after that up to a maximum of $25.

To be honest I don't know how I can go over that limit so quickly! We have 2 computers but my parents only use it for email and light surfing. No wireless internet is used. To be honest I don't download music or movies. I do use the internet to surf but not more than a normal person would. I mostly just look at Youtube or Veoh to watch videos etc. Does the normal person exceed 60GB this fast or is there something wrong with my computer?

I am paying $46.99+extra $25 a month for internet because I go over the 60GB limit. Am I paying too much for internet? Do I have any options?:?:

Thanks!

You'd be surprised at how MUCH bandwith videos take up. If you only watch a few, really, you shouldnt even get near 60gb, but if you stream like crazy, for hours, and in HD. I wouldn't be surprised you got to 60gb. I have bandwith monitoring on my router, and after a long day of youtube, I can see myself using 3-4GB a day.

rogers bandwidth monitor goes by billing cycle does it not? So it might be mid month right now but possible near thw end of your billing cycle so you've gone over.

60gb is a beach though... beeeeach.

I would say switch to dsl but its facing problems as well.

It's possible you have something running on your computer(s) that is generating that much traffic. A good sweep with anti-virus and/or adware/spyware/malware detection software could fix that.

Do you have a wireless network in your home?
If so, and if it is unsecure, it's possible that you have neighbours connecting to your wi-fi router and using your internet bandwidth to download stuff.

Streaming movies like Youtube, Veoh and etc...will push your bandwidth to its limit. Watching those shows/clips/movies still takes alow of bandwidth.

My father will just Youtube and Stream movies and he'll get through 60gb like that *snap!* under a week on his own. =p ( Igot unlimited, so that's ok)

Do you have wireless router? If yes, have secured it? If no Someone might be using your internet connection.

or

Maybe your computer is downloading stuff in the background without you knowing.

No I don't use wireless. So it could be a virus, although I am using AVG antivirus+Zone alarm+Ad aware. I don't know how reliable these antivirus programs are:(

Unlimited bandwith? May I ask what company and around how much unlimited would cost, if you don't mind?

Well to be honest the limit is $25 so I wouldn't sweat it. Also, can't you track usage from the Roger's site?

A 4 minute HQ Youtube video is ~20-30 megs
A 4 minute HD Youtube video is ~60-100 megs

Worst case is you watch 40 hours of HD Youtube content and you'll be at the limit.

On all the computers check down by the clock for programs like Limewire, BitTorrent or Backup programs. If you or anyone has ever installed or used the programs, they could still be running. Alot of those programs like to start up when you boot up your computer.

And also make sure the router you have isn't a wireless router. You say your not using wireless, but possibly your router is one and is improperly setup?

I think Rogers has a Cable modem/Wireless gateway All in One product for their high speed internet.

so basically if you pay the extra $25 you get unlimited bandwith?

on my online tracking its saying in over by $44? did they change the policy?

Rogers won't charge you more than 25$. Eventhough it says 44$ overcharge on the site, they will dicount it down to 25$. So you can have the site say you overused to 1000$, it'll still come out on the bill as 25$.

Well, they charge you for every gig you go over your limit by UP TO a maximum of 25$, so i guess you can say that you pay an extra 25$ for unlimited bandwith.

Just wanna double-confirm .... You do not use wireless (but has a wireless router) or you do not have a wireless router ?

Did you take a look at your daily bandwidth usage at Rogers site ? If yes, do they look reasonable ?

Isn't that only true for certain packages though? I thought the higher up Internet packages (Extreme or over) didn't have any 25$ cap so they could charge you as much as they wanted...

Streaming videos takes a lot of bandwidth. 60GBs is not a lot. You can easily stream 2GB easily, especially if it's higher quality. I suspect you just don't realize how much bandwidth these videos are taking.

Streaming means that you're essentially downloading since you're using up bandwidth just as if you actually downloaded the video.

lol I was at the 58gb out of 60gb yesterday and I called in to Rogers Customer Service. I told them that I require more space and other companies such as 3Web is offering a cheaper and more bandwidth. They told me the best they could do is give me Extreme(95gb) minus 5 dollars.

I told them - nothing else? Forget it , cancel my subscription so I can move on to other providers who can better suit my needs.

She realized she couldn't do it (like for wireless mobile) and transferred me to retentions. That was where I told them my situation and I received Extreme at $59.99 + tax and rental minus 30%.

My bill is now "$47.48" after tax and rental for EXTREME (95GB) service.
Whereas I was paying $44.99 +tax+ rental before for EXPRESS (60GB).

Just tell**them someone else received 30% off and you would want the same.

EDIT:: On a side note, damnit! She was so nice (the retentions lady) and asked if I had any other services trouble.... Should've got my retention deal thru her.. SIGH!!

Yes you are paying too much . I am with CIA CYBERSURF formerly known as 3WEB. ( www.cia.com )

I only pay $ 30 a month all inclusive for unlimited downlaoding / uploading at a ver high speed. I have no restrictions whatsover .

There is NO BANDWIDTH limit and the speed I get is also very fast . I have been with them for 9 years and I have had no technical , service or speed issues with them so far .

There are even other cheaper options like ACANAC which are as low as $ 19/month . ( www. acanc.ca )

Even if you don't downlaod a lot the video streaming live or otherwise on sites like youtube can use up a lot of bandwidth when you just watch or surf , so be careful if you have a capped rate or a limit from Rogers or Bell .

What are your cable speeds?
What Mbps up/down?

leaving Rogers soon.

I was not warned about the 75% usage last month and not warned about being over 100% until I had already reached the extra $25.

How dumb is that? They warn me I'm at 100% when I've already maxed out the extra gb $$$.

Called and had them remove the fee and showed that they never gave me a message until it was too late and that I had never clicked the stop warning message.

At almost $40 per month for 25gb only, I'm moving to Teksavvy even if it means Bell's new rules being put in. I can get 60gb for cheaper.

I would have moved to CIA but they don't offer the cable internet in my area and only offer internet by phone line meaning bell. They have bad service so Tek was the only option.

Our government is bunch of dumb farmers that let this kind of cooperate ruining the innovation of the future computing.

60gb cap is certainly a joke. How will we ever be able to have IPtv? clouded appliances?

I have to ask too. When you say you don't use wireless does that mean you have a router that has wireless and you just don't use it? If that is the case you have a wide open connection that is probably being used by other people. Either turn off the wireless portion of the router or assign a secure WPA password.

Just made an account for this, I am currently using CIA (Cybersurf) and have been for a while now. I believe I'm on DSL, but I'm getting 7mbps/512k. Which results in about 900kb/60kb Upload speed.

I believe cable is 10/512.

the thing with CIA, is unless they have their own tech for the internet your all done anyways if your on the 29.99 plan.

They have two plans 29.99 (uses phoneline) and 32.95 (cable line). This could mean they get their net from Bell and Rogers respectively.

If your using the Bell line, the CRTC ruling is gonna be up soon and you will be limited to 60gb anyways. T

Yeah, always a possibility that you have someone using your parent's wifi.
I did that...I got the 75% on my browser, surprised how Rogers managed to do that...I didn't install any Rogers application or anything, but I had a notification...almost like a pop-up show in my browser.

Hi

Uh Oh, i'm not sure what a wireless router is. I'm a little confused. We basically have two desktop computers/no laptops, that's what i meant.

I did take a look at my bandwidth usages and it fluctuates daily. Maybe one day i will totally not use the internet and check to see if the numbers look right.

From the sound of it you probably have a wireless router with no security enabled. Do you have a box with 1 or 2 antennas on it and cables coming out of the back? If yes you need to get someone in your home who can set up wireless security for you.

I would put money on it that this is your problem. Right now you are running a community internet connection :)

I have a computer in one room which is connected to two small boxes. One is black and has a Webstar logo. It has 5 blinky lights that say Power,Receive,Cable,Data,Send,PC.

The other is a Silver box with the logo DLINK. On the box it says Ethernet Broadband Router. IT also has blinky lightS but these say WAN 1,2,3,4. I think that both computers are hooked up to these.

None of these boxes have antennas on them. This means I don't have a wireless router where people can use my internet, right? *looks hopeful*

What about BELL ?

I see BELL charges you anywhere from $ 1 /GB to $ 2.50 / GB in additional data charges , if you exceed your limit based on the plan .

Do they cap this additional data charge at $ 25 like ROGERS or do they bill you for the additional data usuage no matter how large it is ?

So with BELL if you overuse/exceed by say $ 100 do you get billed for the additional $ 100 or do they reduce it to $ 25 overuse like ROGERS ??

I mean is there a MAXIMUM that BELL will charge you like ROGERS for overuse or will they charge you for the whole overuse amt. no matter how high it is ?

Hmm, it sounds like you don't have a wireless router after all. If it looks like the picture below you should be fine:

http://keesoon.com/images/Dlink-604.jpg

Is it possible someone installed file sharing programs that are always running? I would recommend you have someone look at both computers to find out what is going on.

one hour of streaming video = around 2gb

The bitrate is actually 2Mbit or less for YouTube HD. Meaning 1 hour of video would use about 900MB. Considering the amount of actual HD content (720p) on youtube it is VERY unlikely that is where all the bandwidth is going.

You would probably have to be actively watching youtube movies around 6 hours a day to use that kind of bandwidth in 15 days.
