Which brand of motherboard would be the best in term of balance in performance and reliability? for an I7 system:
Asus or Intel
Can anyone recommend a model from each?
Thanks!

They're all relatively similar.. Just depends on what features you need.
The Asus P6T is probably the most popular x58 board though.

This should sum it up nicely I think ...
$174 - MSI X58M X58 mATX
+ cheapest X58 board with six memory slot.
- only matx, so expansion is somewhat limited
$225 - Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P
+ Good full size board, six slots, good oc'ing
- might be missing features that could be important
$241 - EVGA X58 SLI LE
+ Looks great, six mem slots, good oc'ing
- might be missing features that could be important
$305 - Intel DX58SO
+ Intel board
- 3 memory slots, horrible layout, limited oc'ing
$319 - ASUS P6T Deluxe V2
+ Good overclocking, solid features, good layout
- Getting a little pricey
