On Monday, 20th Century Fox will launch an unusual offer on the website for its Cameron-directed film "Avatar": free tickets for an early look at 16 minutes of footage from the futuristic thriller that will be shown in more than 100 Imax 3-D theaters around the world.

With two screenings on Friday, Aug. 21 (at 6 and 6:30 p.m.), the "Avatar" preview will include an introduction from Cameron and some new footage not shown during July's Comic-Con International convention in San Diego. "Avatar," which will be released in December, is Cameron's first feature since 1997's Oscar-winning hit "Titanic," which generated global ticket sales of more than $1.8 billion.

So how do we get tickets to this thing? And how do we know it's coming to our city?

You're supposed to keep it quiet until after the tickets are given out.
I really want to get a ticket to go, as I have been following Avatar for ages now (even early 2000s when he was still developing the camera technology), but if I don't get a ticket because some person decided it sounded fun to go to without knowing much about the film I will be disappointed.
And it had better come to Edmonton too (otherwise I'd be seriously upset).

You will be able to sign up at the official site at noon (PST) on Monday to get tickets, (but maybe wait until 12:05 after I get mine)

Oh. I missunderstood.
I thought I could screen this website with the pleasure of never seeing another useless avatar. Avatar free.
Never mind.

You might want to put the fact that it is only a 16 minute preview, and not a full movie in the title.

As awesome as it may be, I cannot imagine it would be worth any hassle (line-ups, travelling) to see less then a quarter of a film.

you could 'accidentally' walk into another movie once this free preview is done...

http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/08/17/avatar-day-ticketing-back-online-e-mail-confirmations-delayed/

At noon on Monday, 20th Century Fox launched their free ticket registration for Avatar Day, a special nationwide preview of 15-minutes of James Cameron’s Avatar. But instead of an rsvp confirmation, many film fanatics were greeted to a reoccurring server error message. Somehow Fox didn’t anticipate the huge demand, and the server crashes, crashed, and crashed again........

Looks like the oversold the screening. Got this e-mail today:

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but due to overwhelming demand to see the special scenes from James Cameron’s epic motion picture AVATAR, our AVATARMOVIES.COM RSVP site experienced technical difficulties. As a result of the crash you must re-select a screening time. Please note you may not get the original time you selected. Also new ticket confirmations that will be generated by your selection here will be the only accepted form of admittance"

Went to the site and their was now four screenings Friday night... not two. Was able to get my original time.

I got tickets late afternoon... I suspect it was some glitch, which allowed more people to book then there was tickets... and they needed to two more screening to fill the need.

Why would anyone pay $50 for this? I'm going to check it out because I'm hyped to see the footage, but most normal people wouldn't pay that to see a FULL MOVIE in advance, let alone only a few minutes of footage...now, if Cameron himself were to be at the screening, that would be a different matter, but that's not the case...
