I heard the canada line will be fare free until 2010 can anyone confirm this?

it will not be fare-free.....

Aug 14th, 2009, 03:36 PM
The only fare-free is the trial period that you don't have to pay the $2.50 extra to go to the three stations towards the airport. That's a ripoff, just trying to go to the airport and it costs $2.50 more!

LOL, u made it misleading, ppl in vancouver should know what is the canada line, did you mis-read the GVR icon? :D

I didn't even see the GVR icon. I see it now. Free bump than. We should have had this when they built that purple line that I took once to get to a jack astors in the middle of some dead parking lot where there's supposedly a mall. The graffiti in those staircases is haunting and daunty. Not a fan of their artwork.

Was reading a special section of The Vancouver Sun yesterday in McDonald's about the Canada Line. A few of the downtown stations and one in Airport and a few in Richmond will have the passport stamp. Lot of good info from the paper.

The AddFare to the Airport is BS. Seriously... Let's to do the math.
Downtown to Richmond (2 zones): $3.75
Richmond to Airport: $2.50 (assuming that's what it is for AddFare)
Cost to drop off or pick up a friend = $6.25 x 3 (the transfer time is almost guaranteed to be expired when you want to go back) = total $18.75
I think I'll drive. Good job TransLink, no wonder nobody uses it other than students with UPass and they complain that they need more money so they increases the fares.

for the next 25 yrs it is NOT operated by Translink...so why blame them?
okay, if u drive (deprecitation of the car + gas + time + parking), whats the cost?
also i believe this is created mainly for the olympics, regular users might not use it, tourists will definitely
also i heard there are airport service, some ppl drive the passengers to the airport for $45 per trip...if u have 2 ppl translink is still cheaper
asking a friend for a favor, is it "really" a favor? in the end u probably treat them for a dinner, end up paying more...

If you know you will be going outside of the transfer time you can always buy a day pass which is way cheaper than 18.75. I think they are like 6-7 bucks. Sure not cheap to get to the airport, but if you don't have transportation or want to avoid traffic it isn't really that much.
Also, a month pass is available for something like $70 for regular transit users. I think the expansion of the transit system is a better investment than expansion of the highway/bridge system, but that is for another day.

DP @ $9 won't work as the DP will probably only only work within the regular lines and "might" not include the addfare from bridgeport sta to yvr-airport sta...and therefore will be $9 + $2.50 (still cheaper); also a price hike on the bus fare (monthly soon), i posted (http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=748999) a while ago but date could change anytime

Thank the taxpayers of Vancouver, who will be paying for this transit line and the other Olympic "legacies" for the next 20 years. If you live in Toronto and pay taxes, thank your lucky stars that Toronto pulled out of their Olympic bid. But hey, a half-day free makes up for everything!

How could you possibly think that? The ratio of cost per person transported on Skytrain lines vs. the road system is about 10 to 1. As someone pointed out years ago, we could have paid every worker who takes the Skytrain into Vancouver enough money to retire permanently and still have saved money over building it.

This is a win-win situation for Translink. They offered today free for all, because it is the best way for them to stress-test the system. Free beta-testers!

According to CTV news last night, this may or may not be true that Vancouver tax payers will be on hook for the costs of running it since the whole thing is a P3 project. No one can tell right now. Just have to wait & see.
Also CTV said that Vancouver is the only Canadian city that has a dedicated rapid transit line linking the airport to downtown. The reporter asked the CEO of Montreal Airport if he would like to have something similar and he said yes. And a few people in Toronto said they wanted the same thing too. The reporter said if it did get approved (forgot if it's Montreal or Toronto or both), it would still take them 7 years to complete something similar to Canada Line.
