I am thinking of buying a yaris, but this will be my first car so I am a little in the dark about how to go about this. I read through some of the importing car thread but I am unsure if I should bother with importing or not. I definitely would like to save as much as I can so if importing is the way to go then I will. Any advice would be great full. Even any information just on pricing so I dont get had if I talk to a local dealership.

Thanks for the consideration

1. Air Conditioning
2. If you really need than power locks, windows and side mirriors.
3. Automatic transmission if you can't drive manual
4. Toyota's/factory body kit for the yaris (joking)

If i may suggest if you want little option, try the "Convenience Package" and haggle the price for that down.

Convenience Package
- Antilock Braking System (ABS)
- Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD)
- Air Conditioning
- Power Windows
- Rear Trunk Chrome Trim
- Colour Keyed Mirrors
- Front Splash Guards
- Rear Splash Guards
- Colour Keyed Door Handles
- Blacked-out Side Window Frames
- Power Remote Mirrors
- Keyless Entry
- Power Door Locks

that sounds like a decent package, do you have any idea about pricing? google keeps yielding prices all over the place, and I am also looking at the 5 door model.

I won't buy a yaris without the optional side airbag

I am willing to look at all options for, but first I am trying to establish the min price on the base model. Then the price on the addon packages etc.

my plan was to bargain what I can off the base price as far as I can go, then start adding options and bargaining for those. Maybe this isnt the best method, I really have no idea. My hope is something around 15K, I will go up as needed, but as it stands the dealer could give me a price and as far as I know it is what its worth.

the msrp is 1305 US for the 5 door, but from reading that import thread there is room to barter closer to the dealer purchase price.

update

went to the web page and msrp for canada plus the Convenience Package is $16,350, so it that what I should expect to pay, or is it likely I can get less? I noticed there are discounts for grad students and a few other things, and I have an old sunfire that I might be able to convince them to take

This doesnt include all the extra admin and etching fees they'll try and ping you with nor does it include any negotiated discount (probably $500-$800 off). The sunfire would be worth $500-$1000 to them.

It would be impossible to be "had" by a dealer when buying a Yaris. There's maybe $1,000 to $1,500 margin on a car like this, even if you split that it would be a good deal.
