View Full Version : So much for local bike shops

Took my son's bike in to a local downtown bike shop in our little town (not Windsor) to have it looked over and repaired so it would be safe for him to ride. When we got it back, the brakes no longer worked because the cable was no longer aligned with the brakes, the handlebars where aliened well to the left of the tire and it didn't appear they had done any lubrication of the freewheel or chain. I'd also asked them to greased the hubs, wasn't done either. And the front tire is nearly flat. For all this nothing, we were charged over $50.
If there is a trustworthy bike shop in the Windsor area, I'd like to know about it. I think I'll just buy my son and I two nice bikes and learn to do the repairs myself.

What exactly DID they do to the bike?
I'd be flipping on this. Talk to the owner/manager and demand a refund.
Was it a little one-man shop, or a decent-sized 'respectable' place?

I've seen at least three employees in the shop. I'm too seamed to deal with them at the moment. My wife and I are debating if it could have been something with transporting it home in my Jeep, but I can't see if they did the job right that would effect it. Certainly not the flat tire or the lack of clean oil on the chain. I'm betting the did next to nothing.

go back and complain.
list all the problems you have, go over calmly what you paid for and what should have been done, give them a chance to correct it. If they dont do it with some reasonable compromise have at them. sometimes its difficult to qc every piece, but on a bike thats a safety issue especially when its for a child.
find a way to settle it where you come out ahead.

Think I'll leave it up to my wife. I'm going to get satisfaction in knowing that they won't be making a sale of three new bikes, since my wife and I both plan on buying new bikes, and I guess we might as well get my son one too. My daughter will get the trailer, also not from them. Guess that's at least $2500 in lost business.

Brakes and gears are very tricky to get working properly. You can get by with an ok job but it's much nicer to have everything working precisely.

OP, you seem to have the worst of luck. The EEE and now a bike? What next?

ROFLMAO, sounds like they popped the tyre, took it out of alignement, and cut the brake line  In other words it sounds like they wrecked it up and charged $50 to do so. Incredible.

I didn't say they broke the brake line.
I'll elaborate. We bought the bike at a garage sale and decided we'd better have it looked over before sending our kid out on it. We took it to the bike shop and told them we wanted them to inspect it, give us an estimate as to repairs or whether it was worth fixing, and call us. They called us a week later and told us it needed some new cables and other bit parts. I went in about five days later with my son and asked how the repairs were going (an excuse to look at their new bikes) and they said it was ready and brought it out. We took it home and I had my son ride it down the street and back. He reported that the front brakes didn't work. Last Saturday I have a look over it and found the above problems.

You'll have to take that up with the management, I posted this in Shopping Discussion, they moved it here.

weird, sorry.
You would think this should be in either sports & fitness or shopping discussion rather than motor vehicles
