What are the new PETRO-POINTS earning levels and when do they take effect?

Effective August 25, 2009, members will receive twenty (20) Petro-Points for every dollar spent on eligible convenience, car wash and Certigard purchases.
For fuel purchases, Petro-Points will be awarded based on litres sold:
Five (5) points per litre for RegularClean fuel or diesel
Seven (7) points per litre for PlusClean fuel
Ten (10) points per litre for SuperClean and SuperClean 94 fuel
Other alternative fuels (e.g., Propane and Compressed Natural Gas) will be awarded at a rate of five (5) Petro-Points per unit sold

Right now regular gas earns 10 pts per dollar. So that means at current prices, regular gas will earn approx 50% less at the new earning rate.

Petro-points started to suck when they doubled the cost to convert to sears points. Since then I've stopped going to Petro. Now it looks like it sucks even more. I wonder if this is due to the Suncor buyout.

Edit: Just noticed that Petro now has SuperClean 94 just like Sunoco.

Okay wait can I still transfer Petro-Points to Sears points though?

Petro Points are ripoffs!

Look at the CAA Membership Reward

75,000 Points

You'd need to buy 15,000litres of regular fuel
That is $13,800.
At 10L/100km gas mileage, you'd have to drive 150,000km before you would have enough points.
At an average of 20,000km/year, you'd have enough points after 7.5 years.

that does suck, but oh well i only use superclean when i go to petro anyway...so it's still the same for me. But damn, the only reason i use petro pts is because of the car washes...and they offer 20 pts per dollar on car washes now --*

EDIT: wait they offer pts base on litres not final amounts starting aug 25?! damn! then it's only worth it if gas stay below $1 which wont happen as i only use superclean...i might have to start stocking up gc from another gas station then.

Petro Points are ripoffs!

How is it a ripoff when they are giving you them for free? While I understand it may take a long time and lot of money spent to get to a good reward, that's how all points systems are. That doesn't mean they are "ripoffs". The points are free. If/how you collect them and what you do with them is up to you.

Now if you had to pay extra for gas if you were a points collector then sure it would be a ripoff; otherwise there's no basis to call it a ripoff.

Can you only convert Petro Points to Sears points? Is there any way to convert them to Air Miles?

It's a shame, they'll only give 5 points a L instead of 10 points for every dollards.

I work for bell and I put around 5000-10000$ worth of gaz in a truck every year, we've got a ''deal'' with a gas station owner here that he double the points when we fill up there, but even doubled the return won't be that great. I think I'm gonna collect air miles instead.

That totally sucks, i use petro canada mostly because of the points...then again does this mean will be able to get petro points at Sunoco after the merger as well?

This always happens once a points program has been firmly established and is well on it's way. It looks like to me they're using some of the points from your fuel purchases to help try and boost sales of goods inside their convenience stores.

Points on a fuel purchase are a no brainer (because you need the gas anyway) so they figured they could steal a couple of them with no negative impact.

Any alternative program better than Petro at this point?

I've done some calculations for users of the Citi Petro-Points MasterCard...

(If you have a Citi Petro-Points MasterCard)
2 cents / litre @ 93.1 cents / litre (today's price) = 2.14% return
+
(Petro-Points)
5 points / litre @ 93.1 cents = 5.37 points per dollar
I'll use itravel2000 redemption program as a benchmark... 1,000 per dollar

Points return on itravel = 0.537% (was 1% previously)

Old aggregate return (today's prices) = 3.14%
New aggregate return (today's prices) = 2.68%
New aggregate return (@1.20 / litre) = 1.666% + 0.416% = 2.082%
New aggregate return (@1.30 / litre) = 1.54% + 0.384% = 1.924%

Of course, your return is now heavily tied to the price of gas, so as gas price goes up, your return plummets.

Anything better than 2.68%, preferably tied to amount spent, not amount purchased?
