View Full Version : Snow Tire Group Buy #1?

Hi there,
There is an auto shop by my work in Mississauga (Hwy 10/Britannia) and I was talking to the owner about a possible group buy for snow tires. He has done some in the past but for only like 5 people - He obviously has not been involved in a redflag GB.
I want to get a list going and submit it to him sometime in August so we can get a feel for his prices.
Please put your make/model of your car and size/make/steelies or own rims.
Thanks,
Whizz

Is there some reason why you avoid the SimplyTire group buy? My impression is that they are the favourite on this board. Also, Tires23 is not too far from there and they also have Winter Tire sales.
I won't be in any GB this year because I got snows last year.

are there simply tire group buys arranged every year? I would be interested in that since they're closer to me than this place OP is mentioning and I have actually heard of simply tire...

bridgeston blizzaks avg $195/tire cnd and $104/tire usd. for ppl in southwestern ontario it's crazy to buy canadian when it comes to tires. take a day trip, do some shopping, pick up some cheap shoes for you and your car.

tirerack.com in the USA and have them shipped to a mail order outfit near the border if you're near one. if you buy steelies, they'll even balance them for you at no extra charge.

What are the prices? I have used blizzaks these past 3 winters...I could use Hakkas or any H rated winter studdless tires.

A GB from a US Dealer might actually make the most sense. With the state of the economy in the US - and the fact that the canadian dollar will strengthen over time, it might make sense to do a RFD Day Trip to Buffalo to get snow's. Only thing is we will have to pay GST unless you leave your current tires in the states.
I once went to a place in Niagara Falls NY and paid $500US for 4 snow tires. They took my old snows and put the old rims on the new tires and I left my old bald tires there - didnt have to pay tax on the way back.
The place is called Gene's auto warehouse. And is pretty ghetto - there was this huge black woman in a cadillac who got 22" spinning rims put on when I was there..

Instead of buffalo, you could ust go as far as Niagara falls, NY. Mike @ 24/7 tire will receive your tires for you free of charge and mount, balance and install them when you get there ANYTIME at his garage.
Very friendly guy, and very affordable. $60 for 4 tires on one car, I'm sure he'll go lower if he's doing 10 - 20 cars because of RFD.

7% of the total cost, coverted to Canadian dollars for duties and 5% GST. Have a receipt handy, or I will assume you paid $200 per tire ;)
EDIT: Just be honest about it, and you might get by without any charges whatsoever...

Getting your Winters in September is plenty early... most people (i.e. outside RFD) don't start thinking about it until the snow starts falling and their friend / co-worker / son / etc) gets into a fender bender with Summer tires.
The main thing I would stock up on at this point is STEEL RIMs. They go out of stock so fast and it is hard to get OEM. Order them now, and keep them in your basement. Then it's easy to get your Winters in September mounted and balanced and everything so they are ready to roll.

What's wrong with you people??? LOL.
It's bad enough that I still see people driving around with winter tyres at this time of year (which is dangerous depending on the tyre)--BTW what the hell is wrong with these people? --but now we have to see people lining up to buy more winter tyres in the middle of summer?

Welcome to RFD, we buy things when we can get a good price on them. Off-season is probably a better time to buy, as opposed to when demand has skyrocketed from new provincial laws requiring snow tires (Quebec). Now would be the PERFECT time to set up a group buy for winter tires.
And despite the fact that I just bought a new set (CT's when they were on sale this past winter)I would love to know how much a set of 4 would run: 175/65 R14, just tires
Next car I buy in 1.5 years (year or two old Yaris) will fit the same as my echo, so I'm happy to save a bunch now.
Actually, that being said, is there any risk of having a new set of snow tires sit around for 3-4 years before being used? If there is, maybe I should sit out on this one.

LOL no need for the "this is RFD" lecture  I was just saying talking about winter is depressing/scary right now. We've barely had much of a summer so far, I definitely don't even want to think about winter--too late now I guess :(
Also while you have some merit with the "demand/Quebec" bit, you also should remember that the tyre makers often have rebates going on and for winter tyres those rebates don't show up until it's closer to wintertime. Therefore buying now, you are actually likely paying more money (though arguably not having to worry about availability).

Definitely recommend a performance winter on this vehicle and for driving in the city. Goodyear UltraGrip Performance or Dunlop WinterSport 3D come to mind right away ;) Should be about $1000 for the set (just tyres) on this vehicle.

Quite true, the manufacturers wont start pushing out winter tires til mid to late sept and that is when the retail shops knows which ones have rebates or are more heavily discounted.
Waiting til then is better since even buying in early october is still too early and you still dont need to worry if they will run out of stock or not.

Have u considered the Nokian WR-G2? The UltriGrip isn't that popular. OTOH, the Dunlops are really good.

WR stinks, LOL. The regular UltraGrips are garbage, you're right (they are outdated) but the performance UltraGrips (Ultra Grip Performance and Eagle UltraGrip GW3) are another story. In their class they are quite good. The former is a euro winter tyre brought over here to fill some of the sizes the GW3 doesn't cover.
It's funny that you say the Dunlops are really good because the Eagle UltraGrip GW3 is nearly the same and the UG Performance has similar, er, performance as well. One notable difference is the GW3 and WinterSport 3D are directional whereas the UG Performance is asymmetric.

I know nothing about sizes, but I have a 2010 Mazda 3 GT sedan,.
I would want steel rims as well (used are fine).
I would be in this if price is right, I want GOOD winter tires, I don't really care about price,l but if we can get a deal that is great.

ARe you referring to the older WRs? There is a new model called the WRG2 that is the first all season tire that is snow rated with a snow flake symbol. It has one snow flake symbol out of three. Unforunately, that link that I bookmarked that shows the number of snow flake symbols is no longer valid but here are a few others on the ratings of winter tires (tyres):

The Yokohama's previously mentioned are really good as are the Blizzaks. It's just the Blizzaks don't last that long.
In a European tire test last year, the X-Ice2s did well, much better than the RSis. If you look at the tread pattern of the RSIs, it's not that much different than the Canadian Tire Goodyear Nordics. But like anything, it's all relative to what kind of driving you're doing and what kind of snow you have. For me, I wasn't impressed with the X-Ice 2's traction with the pacific west coastal snow. There was no bite to them.
Neither the Blizzaks or Michelin's are considered "average" tires by the professionals. It was reported the RSIs werent that great in our Vancouvery wintery conditions last year.

WR double-you-schmar. New version or the old, still stinks. It is more a winter tyre that they encourage you to drive in the summer with and end up wearing them out quickly. So yeah it's good in winter but it sucks in summer. Like any "all season" there are trade-offs, unsafe ones at that.
The Hak RSi on the other hand, now that is a good winter tyre. Good in pretty much all winter situations. But the price is certainly up there. If you can afford it, great; but otherwise I think buying a winter tyre for your particular driving area (i.e. performance winter for big cities, regular winter for other areas) is the way to go.
The Yokohama's previously mentioned are really good as are the Blizzaks. It's just the Blizzaks don't last that long.
Maybe the new Blizzaks but tell that to my sister and her first gen Blizzaks of which are so old the date code is 97 on them and I've been begging her to replace them, but the tread still looks like new nearly (no joke). Granted she doesn't really drive that much (her 13 year old car has only 160,000km on it) but still, I have no idea how the tread actually looks that unused on them.
In a European tire test last year, the X-Ice2s did well, much better than the RSis. If you look at the tread pattern of the RSIs, it's not that much different than the Canadian Tire Goodyear Nordics.
Tread patterns "looking like" another tyre have very little to do with actual performance. Goodyear Nordics are unbelievably bad winter tyres (they are only good in snow and nothing else), the RSi is about a thousand times better. You can make a tyre "look like" any other tyre, but if the compound and construction isn't the same the tyre can be vastly different in performance.
But like anything, it's all relative to what kind of driving you're doing and what kind of snow you have. For me, I wasn't impressed with the X-Ice 2's traction with the pacific west coastal snow. There was no bite to them.

I would not call them average either. But what you're saying is that none of the Blizzak (which Blizzak by the way the WS or the Revo or the LM?), the X-Ice2, or the RSi is good for Vancouver? LOL. So what did you find was good then? I'd imagine a performance winter is much more suited to Vancouver than a regular winter tyre...
That's another thing about witners I don't think many people grasp. Sub categories of winter tyres--Performance winters and regular winters--have very different characteristics in winter conditions. In the summer you basically encounter two things, wet and dry (unless you are off-roading which is another story). In the winter you can encounter many different surfaces--snow, slush, ice, salt, dry, wet and any combination of those.
The "regular" type of winter tyres are usually more geared towards snow covered surfaces whereas performance types give up some snow performance for better slushy, wet, and dry conditions performance. This is why it's much better to use a performance winter tyre in city areas where snow is plowed promptly, salting is heavy, and sheer traffic volume also eliminates accumulation (or where there is otherwise not much snowfall and ice formation).
Vladimir
Aug 6th, 2009, 01:55 PM
so what would you recommend for highway and country driving? I do very little city. Country driving means not too often/badly plowed roads... The highway is usually good, but can be slushy sometimes.

I wish I had the luxury of trying out all winter tires to find one. In my case, I'll be getting a decent all season, likely the Nokians and a set of chains. I think the Nokians are rated for 80,000 KMs. However, the wife needs a decent set for her car. Likely, I'll be getting the Firestone Winterforce from TireRack unless the dealers around town will have some decent specials on it or other tires. I'm not convinced on the RSis for use in Metro Vancouver.

Very true. Snow is not plowed promptly in Vancouver and it takes many, many, weeks if at all, for the side streets to be plowed after a snowfall.

It's more about the hassle of dealing with insurance, body shops, rental cars, the reduced resale value of your car, etc.
Reducing wasted time, hassle and stress is worth a lot to me.
I spent $830 last year on Winters... I wouldn't have been willing to go over $1200.

A few years ago I slid through a stop sign on some black ice. Had I stopped 1" sooner I'd have missed stopping where the doors are on a bus that was moving through the intersection. When the rest of the bus moved past ........... result 4 hours late for work, a charge, couple of grand in buss repair, grand for my car, endless hours of grief. Worth the extra $ for excellent snows.

Hi Guys,
I have a wholesale acct at www.TireRack.com in the U.S., so I can get them for even less than their already low prices. Not a ton less, but enough to cover the bulk of the shipping and border costs.
I bought a ton of tires for members last year when the CDN dollar was strong, so now that its back, I'll start again and you guys/gals are more than welcome to be a part of it.
The biggest killer when buying from the states is the shipping and border costs, but the extra discount I get covers the bulk of it.
The more I order the cheaper the shipping costs are per tire as well.
So if anyone wants to check out the site at www.TireRack.com, just price them out and add the exchange. Figure on 10% + $15 per tire to cover all of the misc costs + pst+gst, which should be safe, since I'll exchange at bulk at discount rates as well. No use everyone doing their own exchange and getting killed by fees.
Anyhow, PM me if you are interested. If I get at least 10 sets ordered it will be worthwhile for everyone.
BTW- I'm not making any money with this offer. The RFD family has been good to me, so I'm just returning the favour.

I'd recommend Simply Tire (GTA North-East) and Tires23 to (GTA West) to anyone considering buying tires. Besides the fact that they are our sponsors, their prices are great, along with great customer service.
I got my winters from Simply Tire during the group buy and Allen and his crew did a great job, so I'd highly recommend getting them from there. Though I've dealt with Tires23, the positive feedback from people is reassuring.

I'm interested in pricing for winter tires for my 09 Altima 2.5 SL. I'm looking at the X-Ice2, Blizzak WS-60 and Dunlop Graspic DS3. And I need steel rims, preferrably OEM's otherwise I might just grab them from the dealership.
I bought a Altima 2.5S in February and got a set of X-Ice2 and black rims from Tires23 in Mississauga courtesy of this web site. I believe with tax it was in the $900 range. The tires are great. I live in the central Ontario snowbelt and commute 100km's every day in all kinds of weather. The tires are so good that I drive the Nissan every day, even though I also have a 4wd GMC Envoy as an alternate vehicle.

I bought my X-Ice2 from Costco last year. I returned them after a week because they were crap. They had no teeth to them in our wet snow. In addition to the drive, the car's handling and traction/stability control have a bearing on how well your tires perform.

Hi all,
Just got my first car, still wondering if i should get winter tires. I live in Toronto, probably be driving a fair bit during winter (hopefully when its not snowstorming) and i own a 09 Civic.
Also, if I do decide that I'll need to pick up a set of snowtires, would getting them off RFD during a GB be the best option in terms of quality, pricing and convenience?
Thanks!

If you're a new driver, your instincts and ability to "feel" the road are not as highly developed as you find in people who've been through 10 winters. The foot or two of stopping distance that you save with a good set of winter tires can make the difference between happy motoring with reasonable insurance rates and a much more unpleasant experience.
Some snow tires, particularly the Blizzak type, do not have uniform properties through the full depth of the tread. Beware of used ones. If you are going to keep this car for 8 years or so, you will be buying two sets of tires anyhow, and one of them may as well be snow tires.
Also, some tires are optimized for ice and some for deep snow; in Toronto you want the former type IMO, but honest men can differ on this.

Hi CCCPres,
On your calculations, For the $500 you say that PST is included in your estimate. The second set of numbers $529 doesn't include PST of ~$43. You're assuming that the shipping fees would average $40-$50 in bulk instead of the $108.
This looks like 20% off Tirerack pricing, instead of the previous mentioned 10%. I just wanted to confirm the approximate discount we would expect. 10%, 15% or 20% off.
I looking for 2 sets of tires/wheels.

I purchased my car earlier this year and it will need snow tires. I may be going to the US for a short trip in the fall and thought it would be a good time to buy tires and then have $400 duty exemption. Are there stores which will likely offer competitive prices? I was thinking Walmart or Costco down there but wasn't too impressed by the online price.
Hoping for more well-known shops... should be going to the Detroit/Chicago area. Thanks in advance.

No this makes a lot of sense. Just pick up the rubber from a local shop and throw it into your trunk. This way you don't risk getting charged duty on your whole car because you made an alternation that improved the value.

There is an auto shop by my work in Mississauga (Hwy 10/Britannia) and I was talking to the owner about a possible group buy for snow tires. He has done some in the past but for only like 5 people - He obviously has not been involved in a redflag GB.

Dude, did you even read my post?
I am talking about not paying duty on improvements to a vehicle. This means that you avoid paying duty on the entire value of your car, even if you purchased the car in Canada. This is 100% legit and legal assuming you do not actually mount the tires in the USA!
I never said anything about trying to defraud customs or failing the declare the purchase of tires themselves, or avoiding duty on just the cost of the tires.

anyone ever deal with Bailey Tire in Buffalo? http://www.buffalonytires.com/home.html
According to their site they serve a lot of Canadian customers. I emailed them for a price quote for some winter tires and some rims I want to get for summer. If I'm going to purchase the tires in Buffalo and then bring back my current tires, how much should I expect to be taxed by customs?
They also say they can get rims/wheels from tirerack.com, anyone have experience buying rims with them? If prices are close to tirerack prices for rims, it would be pretty good.

For these early bird deals, including mounting, who the heck is going to mount 3 months before winter? Or can we get the tires now and go back later?
im sure u can mount later
if you buy before sept 1, you can avoid 20 bucks in new goverment fees as well

Hi
I can't get an exact price unless I know the yr make and model of the vehicle its going on.
Ballpark savings would be about 10% on the rims and half on the shipping, which would be about $100 USD less than the retail number above. But it could be a touch more or less

Hello, I am interested in getting 2 winter tires for my 1993 Toyota Camry. I am located in Ottawa though so how does it work? From my research, i can have TireRack ship the tires to an UPS office in Odgensburg, NY and I can come and pick them up?
Please advise.
P.S: If this is too much of a hassle for 2 winter tires, I will simply pick up a pair at a local Canadian Tire.

Thanks a lot for the quote, I am actually looking to mount my current all season tires onto those rims, then I will purchase a set of winter tires to mount on my stock rims, still it wouldn't make much of a difference besides the price of the tires would cost $200-300 more right?

Hi,
I saw some comments regarding the Gislaved Nordfrost 5's. I purchased a set last year for my '01 Corolla (175/60/14 i think), and was quite satisfied with them. I believe they were about $100 each installed.
I put less than 10k on them (ran them from November to mid-April), without visible wear.
They paid for themselves during a trip from North Bay, ON to Toronto...in which there was a snow storm from North Bay to Barrie.
I need a new set of snows for an '09 CSX (likely downsizing to 16"); very seriously contemplating another set of Nordfrost 5's.
If anyone has some suggestions on what to run on a CSX, please let me know. I'd be looking for wheels (steel or alloy depending on the price) too.

Hey CCCPres, I have been watching the quotes you are punching out for people and I can't help but think that the shipping is hurting the deals a lot. I have run a few calculations and figure that I can take a van and a trailer down to Indiana, pick up 20 sets of tires, spend one night, and then return for less than $1000.00
That works out to a mere $50.00 per set of 4 tires with rims.
A friend and I would be willing to do the trip in September when everyones tires are in and ready to be picked up. We could then deliver them to your business in Mississauga.
Between my friend and I we are looking for 4 sets, we would only need to find another 16 sets on here to make it a steal of redflagdeal.
Would anyone be interested in that arrangement???

Perhaps this is where one of us is confused........but I think it is $25-$30 per tire, and not per set. I could pick them up for a rate or $10-$15 per tire, or $40-$50 per set.

I'm in Ottawa as well ... I may go the Costco route if nothing better come along.
I was at Costco on Merivale earlier and asked about winter tires for my car ('93 Camry and 195/70R/14). Long story short, i can have 1 Michelin X-Ice for $127.99 installed so make it $250 for 2 all in.
A couple of other brand names are available (Tiger Paws and Bridgestone) but they aren't much cheaper.
I may check out WalMart or keep an eye out for second hand deals via usedottawa or craigslist.

CCCPres would still have to do the purchasing to keep the costs down, i would just do the shipping. I assume you mean steel rims? Whatever people order I can pickup, 20 sets is about the best I can do with my current setup, but if we got up to 40 sets I could do two trips or rent a trailer bigger than mine.

I'll have to pull out my invoice from the last time I bought 5 sets from TR. I think it worked out to about $20-$25 per tire/wheel, but I'm not sure.
I don't know whether bringing 20 sets across will be too easy. You might get a hassle at the border. Plus you'll have to use a broker who needs to know the origin of each tire. Tires not made in North America (most of them) are subject to a 6.1% duty plus PST+GST + a broker fee.
Anyhow, I'll find out tomorrow

Thanks in advance! Would it be the same price if I bought with tires or not?
They are cheaper to buy from 1010tires.com. Only $165CDN. http://www.1010tires.com/wheel.asp?wheelbrand=Enkei&wheelmodel=EDR9
Plus they always have their winter free shipping promo start up in mid September as well.
Update: I just checked those rims assuming you were putting them on a Mazda3. It shouldn't be much different, regardless of the car.
The rims alone are only $118 vs $135 Retail which is about 15% off. Not bad!
I also selected some tires which seem like a screaming deal.
205/55ZR16 Dunlop SP Sport 8000 for only $55.00! . . that's crazy!
Check it out below including tires, mounted and balanced for free:
16x7 Enkei Performance EDR9

for 2009 Mazda MAZDA3 4-Door i Sport 4 $118.00 $472.00
See specific installation hardware included at no charge.
205/55ZR16 Dunlop SP Sport 8000
Blackwall
for 2009 Mazda MAZDA3 4-Door i Sport 4 $55.00 $220.00
These tires and wheels will be mounted and balanced at NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE.

is this group buy actually going to happen?
are we going to go with CCCPres via TireRack, or are we going to work with a local retailer?

Hi guys/gals,
There's a new snow tires GB #2. I would suggest everyone go with him.
http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=783811
Clearly QTheNukes has more time on his hands than I do to organize this thing and it looks like he can get the same deals as I could, so go for it.
One thing I would suggest is that since he is doing this for no profit that everybody should throw at least $5-$10 cash per tire for his time, especially considering the savings and the aggrevation he'll be going through. :D
Cheers,
