Why are personalized plates so expensive? (in ontario, $23x.xx I believe [last time i checked was few months back] but not sure about other places and i assume they are expensive also)

Because they aren't necessary. It's an extra for people that have cash to burn. They can charge $1000 per plate for all I care. Maybe we can have our taxes lowered a bit if they cost that much.

Consider it a douchebag tax.

LOL before more people start to flame here, I agree they are too pricey. Not only that but they make you wait like 2 months to get them and have to pay for them upfront  Like no deposit or anything, just you pay in full and then you get them two months later. Sucks.

Douchebag, WTF?!?! Why the hate.

I don't know why either, even getting it replaced doubled to like $100.

Because personalized plates are custom one offs, and like anything else that's a custom on off there's a certain degree of extra expense involved in producing them.

ok ok, douchebag tax was meant more as a joke than a truth...

But they cost more because they cost more to make.

Douchebag, WTF?!?! Why the hate.

1) For some reason, drivers with customized plates usually drive like douchebags.

2) They always use such douchebag names, like
"26E4U" (too sexy for you)
"9WONWON"
"IW84NO1"
"LETS M8"
"ASSMAN23" (i guess assman 1 thru 22 was taken)
i could go on...

3) They always seem to look like douchebags. I just recently saw a "RUBZZ2NT' (are you busy tonight) driven by a bald man in a porsche.

I know i know, im generalizing. There are some very nice people out there with vanity plates...but still...

Whenever I think of personalized plates, I think of this.....

Plate: GR8LOVER

Mom: "What kind of sick person puts that on their licence plate!?!? Why does the government even allow such sick stuff to be put on them??!"
Me: "What?"
Mom: "It's a pedo van - grade 8 lover!!" (It was a Ford Windstar)
Me: *LOL* "I think the plate means 'great lover'"
Mom: "They still shouldn't allow it."

But agreed, I've only seen a few plates that were funny or witty, most are douchebag names. I guess it's useful for companies but like others have said, it's probably just what it costs them to make a 1-off set of plates.

Oh c'mon it costs them like all of 10 cents to make these plates. Okay that's an exaggeration but it's not that pricey.

Yes it does cost more to do than regular plates, but not that much more. It's not much different than going to a vinyl shop and having a custom decal made up and that doesn't cost that much. They use the exact same "blank" plates and the exact same stamping process with the same letters and numbers to do the stamping. They just have to arrange them according to what someone wants. That costs $230 or whatever? Yeah right. I don't think so.

And I have a question...

I share a car with my brother, and I am planning to buy a car myself next year; so Can I buy customized plate without having a car? And can I keep this Plate for as long as I want?

Therefore, they'll pay whatever the price.

Yes, if the plate is not registered with a car thru mto, it's nothing more than just a piece of plastic (or whatever material it is)

Yeah the same question was asked on another thread I believe you can get the plates without the car. As for how long you can keep them I'm not sure. I mean you can keep the physical plates forever (they never actually ask for them back), but I'm wondering if there isn't some time period where, if they are not registered with/on a vehicle, they expire? I mean otherwise any plate that anyone ever had would never be available again even after they died, etc. There has to be some expiry period where someone else can get that plate if you don't have it registered.
