In case anyone is wondering about the CPU performance, I ran superpi on this in the store and it took 58 seconds for 1 million digits.

You get what you pay for but cheaper than a netbook! Priced like a refurb but it is not. I'd rather the 14.1" screen on this guy than 15.4". Pretty good post!

It's a great laptop for the price, I bought one for my parents. They like the wireless, bright screen, keyboard, and the performance is good for word processing, internet browsing, and pictures.
You can add a 2gb memory to get a total of 3GB, I believe it has 2 slots.
Shortcomings are no SD card slot, and webcam.

It's definitely basic though, and it's inelligible for the Win 7 upgrade.

It's also clearly from the Acer side of the company, going off the pics. My 3 year-old eMachine laptop was very much a Gateway product and probably much better built.

Low priced, but you get what you pay for. I'd recommend waiting until October's deals.

although this laptop is inelligible for a windows 7 update, would it be possible to upgrade it yourself to windows 7? Like would all the drivers work etc? And would it make a noticable difference in speed with only 1 gb of ram? Thanks

Considering the retail cost of Win 7 full version will probably be several hundred $ it would hardly be worthwhile. But with just 1GB you'd likely be better off going to XP instead.

I have no idea what those figures actually mean...how would typical dual core processor perform on ur test?

but for the price, this is a decent deal. Might consider upgrading the ram since it runs vista basic, or downgrade to xp would be better

It performs similarly to an Athlon XP 2000 Desktop CPU from 7 years ago and about 30% faster than a netbook.

A core 2 duo such as the T6600 does it in about 26 seconds.

But you gain a 14" screen which is better than 10" Netbooks for those of us with lousy eyesight. Radeon X1200 and a DVD drive, too.

Still - another $50 would get you some speed too.

October's deals? I am new here and would like to know when a laptops sale will come, generally, in Canada? Is there a "back to school" sale in August? puzzled~

You are not eligible for a *free* Windows 7 upgrade from the manufacturer, but as far as I know this machine is eligible to use the 50% off retail Windows 7 upgrades that were recently on sale for preorder (that sale is now done.)

Supposedly on machines with low amounts of RAM such as this Windows 7 is much faster than Vista, so I have heard at least.

I am tempted by this as I have low hardware needs. Is a there a better machine around the $400 mark?

You can run OSX on AMD, no problem. This particular laptop/chipset combo, probably not, as the hardware requirements are not surprisingly more picky than with Intel. But in general, OSX can and will run on AMD with a variety of supported nVidia and ATI chipsets.

Damm I was going to buy one for school but now the price went up. Heck I wanted to price match it at Staples, since I am a poor student because they have the same machine but now I can't.

How often does staples send $50 coupons? Because I have been on there mailing list and they haven't sent me one in over a month.

$50 coupons are very rare. $20 off $150 coupons are the norm. I don't think you can stack coupons anymore either, at least not online.

I've been using this laptop since January, paid $399 at FS and have been very happy with it since. Kinda flimsily built, but it's held up pretty good, and it's plenty fast enough for internet, movies, and 2d games. (probably a good idea to put another 1 gig of ram in though).

I ordered this two days ago for ISPU and grabbed it last night from the Scarborough location. First impressions are that it is decent and good value compared to how much some netbooks are going for right now.

I didn't even give the pre-loaded Vista a chance to boot  formatting and putting on XP right now and hope I won't run into any driver issues. I will see how it performs or else I can always add another stick of ram or return it back to Bestbuy worse case. This will be a surprise for my wife next month when it is her birthday. She likes my netbook but watches some filipino soaps on DVD so she needs a DVD rom and surfs the net and chats with her family back home.

Question: Does the AC adapter use a 3 prong connector to the wall?

I ask this because my room has only a plug with 2 prongs and no ground. Hopefully someone that has one can answer.

Not if you wiped the hard drive! Even if they failed to notice, that would be WRONG.

Well its a 60 year old house, the outlet looks like the first picture in this article, since you never seen one...

Problem with this article is that adding a 3 prong outlet and connecting a ground to the outlet box doesn't ground ****, the author is a quite possibly a moron and sadly he got 4.5 stars for the article because people don't understand how grounding works.

I meant I have never found a laptop with only two prongs - they really like grounding, I guess. (I'll let you teacher slap you for using "you seen" in a sentence.) ;)

Short of paying for upgraded wiring, I don't have much useful help to give you... get a lappy with a BIG battery and charge it elsewhere in the house - maybe even off the stove's auxiliary plug if nothing else is grounded? [shrug] Get a plug-checker for $10 and see which ones are safe to use.

There is so much crap software they install, it will take forever to uninstall. Where can I get a free windows vista basic installation disk / iso because all I can find are torrents for vista ultimate and emachines tech support is useless, all they know to do is create a recovery disk and they don't understand english well.

Also does Microsoft send you a free disk if I call them or do they charge?

Screw that...go to your friendly Dollarama and get a 1$ 3 prong -2prong adapter. You don't really need grounding for the adapter.

Yes it is 3 prong.

Not if you wiped the hard drive! Even if they failed to notice, that would be WRONG.

I left the restore partition there in case and going to be keeping the laptop anyways because Windows XP runs great with 1gb of ram. If I happen to come across a good deal on another 1gb I will not hesistate to throw it in there.
