Alright so, Newegg has the AMD Phenom II X4 945 processor clocked in at 3.0GHz available for just $197. This is pretty good considering the next lowest price for the processor (according to PriceCanada) is ~$260. It's a quad core 3.0GHz processor with the 6MB of L3 based on AMD's 45nm manufacturing process. Also, it's an AM3 chip so it supports both DDR2 and DDR3 RAM depending on what motherboard you use. The only real downside is that it's not a black edition processor so overclocking may be a little harder if that's what you plan on doing.
To make the deal even hotter, there's a bunch of combo deals with the processor which you can find over here:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/ProductCombos.aspx?Item=N82E16819103675&SubCategory=343&SortField=0&PageSize=10&page=1
One of the combos there just happens to be the 945 + a Foxconn A76ML-K motherboard for $197 (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.213745). Yep, you basically get the processor for less than $200 PLUS you get a free motherboard. It's not a very good motherboard but it's still more or less free. (Edit: It should also be pointed out that technically, this board does not support 125W processors such as the 945. The board is essentially free but you won't be able to use it in conjunction with this particular CPU.) There are also a few other very decently priced combos on there so take a look.

Terrific post! One of their combos is the CPU plus a motherboard for $199.99. Not only is the CPU a hot deal but Newegg will throw in a motherboard for free! This is the hottest PC components deal in recent memory. High five ASharp!

Credit should go to snoosebum over at HardwareCanucks (http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/) (great site by the way ;)). I found the deal over there and just felt like sharing so I thought I'd post it here. :) But yeah, it's a fantastic deal. There really are some great combos there. If you don't want the "free" motherboard from Foxconn, there are a few other ones on there that only cost an extra $25-50. Also some decently priced CPU + RAM combos there as well. For example, you can get the 945 + 4GB OCZ Reaper DDR3-1600 for $224.98 (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.207764).

good price for the combo but I wouldn't put that CPU in it personally.
If someone buy that combo, I might be interested in the cheap motherboard. I was thinking about buying a couple cheap AMD mobos

I just had a PC go out on me, it lasted 6 years so I'm a little behind on knowing the current tech. This looks like a good deal but could anyone give me a little help?
I was looking at using AMD+ATI for the supposed benefits of their "Dragon Platform" - Does Dragon give results or is it just empty marketing? Is there a motherboard you'd suggest with it?
Thanks in advance!

Mainly empty marketing. The Dragon platform is actually the 790 chipset (this is the 760, an older one. However it has the SB710 southbridge which is why I just ordered it). Foxconn stuff isn't bad, they make a lot of brand name parts (like Apple) but don't have a huge name for themselves with the general public.
The difference in AMD chipsets is often next to nothing, they add or disable bits of it. The 770 is a lower end 790, the 760 is a lower end 780 (with the 740 below those). The SB750 southbridge supports RAID5, the SB710 doesn't. There are other variations, but unless there's a specific feature you want, you'll probably never notice the difference. Buying from better quality manufacturers matters more (like Gigabyte always use great parts on their boards).
I was about to order a 95W processor since that's all my board can handle, but this is cheaper and faster, so I'm happy :) Thanks OP

Price is now actually ~$3 lower at $197 (down from $199.99).
In terms of the Foxconn motherboard that you "get for free", I probably wouldn't use it in conjunction with this CPU. It's more of a budget board and I'm not so sure it would meet the power requirements of the chip. I guess it would be better for people who were planning to build a more powerful machine along with a weaker office machine or HTPC. They can grab a new (better) board for the 945 and a weaker chip for the Foxconn board. Alternatively, like I mentioned in the original post, you can pick up one of the other boards for a few extra bucks instead and have a good powerhouse for cheap.
Even if you're only considering the chip, might as well grab the board anyway since it's free. :-0

Warning: I hope none of you picked up the Foxconn board from the OP. That board can't handle CPUs above 95w. Worst case you will blow the voltage regulators on the board and take the CPU with it.
No idea why newegg would make a bundle like this... it's stupid

there's more then 1 choice of mobo you can combo it off with, if you get this combo, the one with the 790gx board that uses DDR3, it's pretty good.

This thing is insanely overpowered for the HTPC I'm putting together (an ION would do :P), but this deal is just too good to miss.
I am very concerned about noise/power consumption. How loud is the stock fan on these 125W phenoms? In any case, it's probably too loud as is. Can this CPU be underclocked/undervoltaged to run at ~1ghz max? Can the multiplier be lowered given that this is not a Black Edition? I know it can't be increased. What TDP can realistically be achieved?
Is the stock fan silent at idle load?
By the way, the ASRock A780GMH/128M can run this CPU with the newest BIOS. The more expensive AM3 boards require more expensive DDR3 RAM, which results in a negligible performance improvement.

This would serve an HTPC very well. These CPUs take very little power to idle and the HTPC loads won't take it too far off idle.
If I didn't just buy a q9550 (at 4ghz) I would have jumped all over this. I <3 AMD.

Locked CPUs will let you lower the multipler but not increase it beyond its cap. Most cheap AMD mobos (mATX) will not let you lower the vcore, only increasing it (don't know why). So you are stuck with a fixed vcore. A lot of the ASUS AM2+/AM3 boards have a problem setting the vcore too high causing high CPU temps.
You can take a look at this for underclocking/undervolting info:

^They're both good. It depends on your budget, if you overclock, and how much you upgrade. I went with the 945 being future proof (I hope this one lasts more than my X2 3800+). It's on the new AM3 socket so it supports DDR2 and the new DDR3 memory specs.
940 supports DDR2 only with the AM2+ socket, but is highly overclockable with the unlocked multipliers (since it's the Black Edition).
Honestly, you can't go wrong with either.

I suggest the first option, with the Foxconn 790gx ddr3 board. The 790gx is a great chipset and the ddr3 is futureproof with a small premium today. If you want to save a buck choose a 790gx chipset with ddr2 and reuse whatever you're running.

acutally, AMD PII has problem with DDR3 memory controller over 1333Mhz running on 790 ddr3 motherboard
so better to wait for new chipset coming at the end of this year

found conflicting info on the mobo from foxconn that comes for free. On Foxconn website maximum watt they've tested is 95w.
http://www.foxconnsupport.com/cpusupportlist.aspx?type=mb&socket=Socket%20AM2+/AM2&model=A76ML-K&cputype=AMD
however on AMD site there is a processor they recommend and it's 125w same as 945.
http://products.amd.com/en-na/RecommendedMBDetail.aspx?id=292
so i think this board should be safe for use as long as you don't overclock.

Ended up going with the MSI 790GX-G65 and AMD Pehnom II X4 945 bundle since the MSI can handle 140w cpu, only problem with mobo is that people have some DOAs and RAID issue which should be fixed in the upcoming bios updates. Plus ordered the OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB (2x2GB) DDR-3 for $80!!! The memory itself is a good deal since they're floating around the $100 range at other places.
If I went with the CPU+MEM combo and bought the MOBO seperately it would cost:
CPU+MEM $221.99
MSI MOBO $144.99
TOTAL: $366.98
But the CPU+MOBO combo and bought ram seperately:
CPU+MOBO $281.99
OCZ MEM $79.99
TOTAL: $361.98
Saving me in total of $5!!! HOLY GUACAMOLE batman the savings just keeps on adding. Somehow my wallet feels lighter :(. Then again I just carry plastic.

I can't say it with 100% certainty since the Foxconn site seems to be borked now so I can't check the CPU support list but, I'm pretty damn sure that it'll work. I haven't seen an AM2+ board yet that doesn't support the older AM2 chips.

If anyone in the Toronto is looking to get the CPU but not interested on the motherboard included in one of the Combos, I would be willing to pay $60 for the ASRock A780GMH motherboard.
That means.. you pay the combo price 228.99 + tax + shipping =~$$275
and once the package arrive, I'll come pickup the motherboard and give you $60.
So you pay $215 (tax and shipping included) on the CPU.
If you just buy the CPU, it's $237 including tax and shipping - so you're saving an extra $22 dollars with out much of a hassle... (I'll pick-up).
I may also be interested in the Foxconn A7GM-S 2.0 if some one has already bought that combo but having second thoughts about that mobo.

Yup, both versions (there are two) (http://www.foxconnsupport.com/cpusupportlist.aspx?type=mb&model=A76ML-K&cputype=) of the 5200+ are supported by this board.
Does anyone know how high you can OC using air cool?
How long is a piece of string? Depends on how good your air cooling is (a good high end air cooler will cool it better than a stock cooler), how far you're willing to push the voltage upwards (this isn't really good for the CPU over the long term, even if it does run stably to start), the motherboard you have (they differ), the RAM you have, the processor itself, etc. Rule of thumb is to buy a CPU you'll be happy with and an overclock is a bonus.
