Our Akai VCR is still in pristine working condition, 15 years since we bought it. My parents still program it to record television shows. The same can't be said for our Panasonic VCR; it always ate our tapes and we had to unscrew the unit to take them back out.

I should have clarified. I know they've been around 4-5years I suppose I just don't consider them to be mainstream. But nm this is going nowhere lol.

were these display models?

RP DLP has been not been in production since 2006 or before then. So either they are really old and still in the box, or used and abused!

Back in 70's Akai tape decks and tuners were top brands. But these new Akai's are probably just rebadged cheap Chinese stuff not Japanese.

Akai-branded DLP TVs at one point (not sure about these models but a lot of them) were manufactured by Samsung (far from "cheap Chinese stuff"

they were brand new in box, in fact they didnt even have a display model. my guess is that they were hidden in the warehouse and nobody knew they were there for a long time, then finally somebody saw them and drug them out. online i think i saw somewhere that one of those models is from 2005. it should be noted they dont have hdmi. the box also said something like texas instruments dlp technology on it
