Heading to New York for the first time next week. Aside from the usual tourist destinations can anyone suggest some lesser known activities to partake in while we are there?

The Upright Citizen's Brigade Theatre is where I always try to send people. I've seen over 100 shows there, no lie. Go see Asssscat on a Sunday night, (line up EARLY if you want the free late show) and you'll see a shitload of famous people. www.ucbtheatre.com
Kind of touristy, but if you're going to Central Park, I like to get food from the hot bar (and a Jamba Juice) from the Whole Foods at Columbus Circle. Nice way to have a no-hassle picnic.
There's also an AWESOME flea market in Chelsea that occupies 2 floors of a parking garage. Saturday and Sunday, 112 West 25th Street (between 6th and 7th Avenues). The prices aren't amazing, but you find things to look at that will just blow your mind, like personal scrapbooks from the turn of the century. The Americana is amazing.

If you're a fan of basketball, you have to go to The Cage.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'll definitely look into visiting a few of those places. We are there for 5 days, and want to see some sights off the beaten tourist track.

Walking across the Brooklyn bridge to have pizza at Grimaldi's is nice (www.grimladis.com). It is busy but the pizza is great.

Now that sounds like a plan. I love pizza and have always wanted to try coal oven pizza.

the consensus seems to be Di Fara's over Grimladis...i too have been looking into this having only been to John's of Bleeker....http://www.johnsbrickovenpizza.com/ but looking to try out Di Fara's on my next trip...
