Yes. Post more information.
- What city are you living in/flying from?
- What time period are you looking to fly?
- Do you have flexibility in departure/arrival city? Willing to fly from the US?
- Do you have flexibility to fly different days?
- Do you have patience to wait to purchase tickets?
Use www.kayak.com. Search surrounding airports and do a flexible date search if you can.
For US flights, I only fly out of Detroit, but I'm lucky that I have that option. If you live in Toronto, often a road trip to fly out of Buffalo is worthwhile. Just a quick example: Buffalo-LAX - best price right now is $215US all in. Toronto-LAX - best price is $500US all in.

the dates would be approx aug 19th to 23rd
we could drive to buffalo if the savings are worth it.
theres a convention we are going to on those dates so we have to be there for at least of the 4 days for sure (the friday/sat)
other then that its open.

If you're going to go to Buffalo, consider taking the bus. www.megabus.com offers trips from Toronto to Buffalo airport for pretty cheap. The lowest I see from Toronto to Buffalo is $14 and $9 going back. $23 is cheaper than a tank of gas. :)

If you are using Kayak, and got to their 'Buzz' link and choose Lowest Fare, it will look at Buffalo/LAX over all of their searched dates and pull the lowest fares. So there may or may not be useful for the date you are looking at, but it's a good indication of the lowest possible fare you might see for that return trip. $217 was found on United leaving Sept. 15-30, and other various dates. Lots of other dates found in the $217-225 range. Just because that is the lowest price though, doesn't mean a random search or your dates will have anything close to it though, but it's a really handy little feature to determine absolute lowest prices. :)

Cheapest is $225USD flying from Buffalo, though that is arriving late on the 20th (11pm). For a better time, $260US gets you in on the 19th late (11pm), so you are well rested for the Friday. Both flights are through AirTran (airtran.com). United has a decent price as well at $269US, leaving early on the 20th and returning on the 24th. Flights around those dates from Toronto run about double ($480US on Continental) for the cheapest tickets.

Try the following different airport codes
1. LAX, This is Los Angeles International Airport
2. LGB, Long Beach Airport
3. ONT, Ontario Airport (yes there is an Ontario in California)
4. SNA, John Wayne Orange County Airport
Most flights go to these airports and depending on which day/date/and return you pick, you can get a good savings from airport to airport.
Cheers.

doomhammer, you forgot BUR -- Burbank, California -- another LA airport that's not too far from LAX. Served by JetBlue (which also serves Buffalo).

find the flight on here then go to the site of the airline to book, simple as that!!
or if thats too much work, orbitz.com was the cheapest of the travel sites...

Just to step foot on an AC plane to the US will cost you at least $70-$80, each way, in taxes and surcharges alone. Even if you find a cheap AC ticket.
That's why crossing the border is so attractive.

so far every airport shows up as more then when selecting lax
should i be trying to purchase 2 seperate flights rather then one round trip?
i checked the bus thing out, it seems difficult to time it so that the bus gets to the buffalo airport to jive with a flight.
am i missing something?

you can look for two one-ways... make sure you also check Southwest.com (they dont post their fares on other sites).
