Booked a flight to Queenstown, NZ and stopping in Gold Coast for a week in August. Just wondering if anyone has any accommodation recs for that area?

I'm open to hostels or hotels; it'll be me and my boyfriend. Prefer a place for under $100/night if possible, star rating doesn't really matter to me, as long a the place is clean and located in a decent location.

Will probably head to Brisbane for a few days as well since it's relatively close by. Anyone hotel recs there as well?

I lived in the gold coast for a year about 5 years ago now.... damn I'm getting old... anyways.

I was renting an apt in broadbeach, and didn't really need to stay at a hotel. However there are tons of them, and your pretty much good(location wise) with any hotel or hostel that has 'surfers paradise' in the address, as the city name. Its the main part of the touristy part of the gold coast. Anywhere in surfers would be within a 10 min walk of the beach, and surfers is filled with bars, night clubs and hotels along the ocean

I stayed at the Islander Backpackers (http://www.islander.com.au/index.htm) which is in a nice location. It's both a hotel and a hostel (click on the backpackers link on the site for the hostel page). It's not exactly on the beach but probably just a block or two. It's also centrally located close to the shopping areas and the nightlife.

You may try lastminute.com.au, they have some nice deals (secret deals). We were in the Gold Coast - Surfer's Paradise in May and got 3 nites at the Marriot for AUD$99 per nite, at 32/Floor with full ocean view. They also have lots of apartments for rent, usually needs 5 days or 7 days consecutive stays, in your case is fine.

Also try wotif.com, they have some nice deals.

Forget priceline.com, totally not worth it in Australia.

Try accommodation nearest to the Surfer's Paradise, that's where the actions are, beautiful beach, casino, nite clubs, best restaurants, prettiest boys and girls. Boy, I missed the place.

The last minute site is great. Thanks for that! I was hoping there'd be something similar to priceline or hotwire for australia.

Now is there a site like betterbidding.com where I can try to find out the names of the hotels before booking it?

Priceline does have hotels for Australia. I just checked and it appears Hotwire doesn't.

Yup, that seems to be correct. They seem to offer bidding for Brisbane and Sydney, but not the Gold Coast.

I tried priceline.com for hotels in Sydney and found that they were almost always more expensive than similar hotels that I can get from lastminute.com.au and that's even before the added-in fee from priceline. That's why I don't recommend priceline for australia.

Mind you lastminute.com.au also charge a fee of AUD$5.XX each time.

^ yea i realized the $5.xx booking fee when i booked my hotel yesterday!!

i took the "secret" 4.5 star hotel lastminute.com.au offered for $90 AUD/night (booked for 4 nights) and it turned out to be the vibe gold coast hotel. seem to have pretty favourable reviews of tripadvisor so i'm happy. did some digging and it seems like the same room is offered for $99 through the hotel's site so i saved 'bout $10/night.

expedia offered the same price but in USD.

so i'm happy i saved some!
