What's the best deal going for furnace filters?

Washable, replaceable?

I believe that Canadian Tire has 25% off on some of their furnace filters....brand is 3M Filtrete if my memory is correct. These are not washable. These are also much more expensive than your typical $3-$5 fiberglass filters....if you want to filter out a lot of allergans. They are good for up to 3 months.

I second the 3m filters...a bit more money..but buy a few when on sale...and they work better than the basic fibreglass...

Picked up a 3-pack of 3M at Costco. They worked out cheaper than what CT was selling them for at the time. Not sure if this is still the case though.

Keep in mind that most furnaces are designed in mind with fibreglass filters.

Using these premium may restrict too much airflow. A real electronic cleaning unit is the way to go if you want cleaner air.

Do I have to go to the dealer to purchase the filters or can I buy them at HD or CTC.

How much would the HC10 and HC16 go for?

Unless you have an allergy problem you don't need to waste money on expensive filters like 3M Filtrete, let alone electrostatic, etc. filter systems. (Check out Consumer Reports articles at the library for their test results.)

I bought a washable filter at Home Depot about 5 years ago for ~$25. I wash it in the shower stall every 3 months or so. About a year ago I took it apart and gave it a more thorough washing. (Some lint had built up that couldn't be washed away in the shower or vacuumed out.) There's nothing in a filter that wears out so I don't expect to need a new filter unless I get a new furnace that requires some different size.
