To be honest, these were probably the only things that were there to do... wife and I went last month and it was a little bit boring, aside from the above 2 activities. The boat tour was very nice...long and you go by a Castle as well as a little bit into the US waters. The houses along the shore are amazing.

There's a restaurant there called "The Lobster Trap", you should try it - their battered shrimp, stuffed sole & fish & chips were awesome.

Have fun!

Kingston is not a family fun place...I was there last year with my neicees and they were bored to tears. Aside from the boat cruise which they liked but not to much....there wasn't anything. We would have had a better time staying in Toronto and doing things here.

I always wondered how people make a decision to go to a place and not know why or what to do when they get there? How did you choose this spot? Throw a dart at a map?
If you found this forum on the web, surely you can find things to do at your choice of vacation on the web?

I agree that Kingston is not a fun town for kids. We went to Fort Henry and my two older kids liked it (9&8yr old boys) but it was a short 3 hour visit. Other than that we didn't find much to do. I remember the boat tour from my youth as being incredibly boring.

What about Ottawa instead with a day trip to 1000 islands?

John A. McDonald's burial place. See how lavishly Canadians honor their founding fathers (drunks?).

Berry Picking at Fruition

Lunch or ice cream on Wolfe Island (don't drive over or you will be stuck in a two hour lineup for the ferry on the way back). The ferry is free. There is also a corn maze in the fall.

Tea and scones at the Tea Store on Princess.

Don't bother with the mall, all the good shopping is on Princess Street starting at Division.

Depending when you're going there are certain festivals that are good (e.g. Taste of Kingston).

Movies in the square on Thursday evenings (www.downtownkingston.ca). It's free, bring your own lawn chair.

The Drive-In at Kingston Family Fun World on Division north of the 401. It also has go carts and rides for the kids.

Sandbanks beach in Picton.

Gananoque to take in a play at the 1000 island's playhouse and ice cream afterwards at Nana Splitz.

For places to stay, the Ambasador hotel is popular with families because of the indoor pool and waterslide. It's not near the downtown though. I would recommend a B&B. If you really want to save money, you can stay in a residence at Queen's for very cheap in the summer.

Local Restaurants:
Wooden Heads (gourmet pizza, reservations recommended, kid friendly)
Kingston Brewing Company a.k.a. Brew Pub (local brewery, great steak pot pie)
Copper Penny (fries are great, has a kids menu)
Coffee and Company for hot chocolate (for the kids!)
Pan Chancho (amazing bread, good breakfast and lunch but a little pricey. I recommend getting takeout)
Mino's Takeout (Queen and Barrie Streets) for a huge slice of chocolate cake.

I would skip Chez Piggy.
