Hello, I am a new member today, in which is seeking faster internet.

I am a tech enthusiast and life has been hard. I currently own Rogers Yahoo! Ultra-Lite internet service and the service is extremely crappy (60kb/sec). To further prove my point, it took me 2 days straight to download the first beta build of the upcoming Windows 7.

After feeling miserable, I found out that almost all of my friends are using top speed 5Mbps internet, most likely DSL. I'm on cable so it may be different, however I felt astonished by the prices of some DSL services (lowest I could find, $33.99 CDN, Acanac Home). This may seem appealing enough, but I have checked other DSL services and seems that the specs on speed are very similar yet priced higher so I know chances are that there is cheaper services than Acanac. I'm currently trying to aim as much of lower than the monthly fees of my Ultra-lite service, I don;t care about promos I need to in years. Have you seen deals like this lately?

I just posted above. www.acanac.ca

3 GB and unlimited downloading no ports blocked.

$31 a month prepay a year upfront.

18 a month if you have a local phone provider. Add $8 a month if you do not. Also a $49 modem fee (in the 31 above I prorated that over 12 months)

TekSavvy (http://www.teksavvy.com/en/index.asp). Up to 5Mb/s. $30/month. No contract. 200GB bandwidth. Best ISP ratings on DSL Reports and best customer service on the planet (well at least in Canada.)

BTW since you're now on cable you should know that DSL speed depends on proximity to the Bell central office or remote concentrator. If you live too far away then you won't be able to get 5Mb/s or even close to it. Call TekSavvy, give them your address and ask what you can expect. All DSL ISPs use Bell's infrastructure so the speeds will be the same, good or not, no matter who provides you with DSL.

You need a home phone line active or else it is dry-loop which adds anywhere between $7 and $25 a month. Thats $37 a month. Acanacs equivalent is $25 a month plus equipment of $49 vs. TekSavvys $75.

Primus had light home phone and 1mb internet dsl for $39.95 a month. Equipment is $35 or $2 a month.

Sounds like Acanac is the winner unless you want a home line which I am considering with Primus. Primus also has a nifty telemarketing call blocking system.

Am I missing something in the above pricing?

Am I missing something in the above pricing?
1. TekSavvy has no contracts and better customer service than anyone else. Good customer service may not be worth much to you, but after dealing with Robbers and Hell it's almost priceless to me.
2. TekSavvy also offers home phone and LD at competitive rates. Get all three, DSL, home phone and LD and you also get a $5 bundle discount. (e.g. $51.50 + 2.9¢/min LD or $66.50 with unlimited NA LD.)
3. You can get good, new DSL modems for $50 from a variety of sources, less for used/refurb on eBay or new, lesser brands. If you shop around you can even get DSL modem/wired/wireless routers for under $50.
