New York City - MetroPCS v Verizon reception?

I've heard that T-Mobile and AT&T reception are not very good in the Columbia University area. Does anybody know about the new MetroPCS service, and how it compares to Verizon? Any other tips on acquiring cell phones would be greatly appreciated. Are there better deals anywhere, for e.g. in Chinatown (similar to Pacific Mall!)

Are you looking to just have a cellphone to use while in NYC short-term, without dealing with a Canadian carrier and getting charged roaming fees?

If so, and you don't mind a cheap phone, pick up a Tracfone & some minutes at any Duane Reade or Radio Shack. It's a pay as you go thing, really cheap, reception has been fine for me (though I don't normally go as north as Columbia).
