When you sign up for a 3 year contract for a smartphone, it must include data. Can the data plan be canceled at some point before the 3 years are up? Is the answer different for telus/bell/rogers?

Thanks.

Through Fido at least, you pay a cancellation fee of 5$ a month for your data package for what you have remaining on your contract (plus $20 a month for voice). This is, however, when you cancel your contract. I'm not sure about just cancelling data.

Found this on one of my HUP documents from Rogers, so it appears they have separate cancellation fees for data and voice.

"Data Early Cancellation Fee (DECF) is the greater of (i) $25 or (ii) $5 per month remaining in the Data Term, to a maximum of $100 (plus applicable taxes), and applies in addition to the ECF for termination of your service agreement. If you subscribe to a plan combining both voice and data services, both the ECF and the DECF apply."

Wow, if the $100 maximum cancellation fee for Rogers is true, that is actually not as bad a I thought. It's only ~3 months worth of data service. You can get a wifi-enabled phone for $100 (magic/dream/iphone3g), cancel data, and effectively pay $200 for a wifi+voice device. Beats buying an unlocked phone for $450 and having to sign with rogers for voice anyway.

The $100 maximum data cancellation is true.

$100 maximum to cancel data before data contract is up. $25 minimum, even if you have 1 month left.

$400 maximum to cancel voice before voice contract is up. $100 minimum, even if you have 1 month left.

$500 for both

Don't forget taxes
Data = $113
Voice = $452

For Telus unless it's changed recently you need to maintain the Data Plan for 1 Year.

I think if you cancel it before you get charged the difference between the Data 3 Year Promo and the Regular 3 Year price of the phone.

This come from ROGERS website...

"The Data Early Cancellation Fee more fully described in your Wireless Service Agreement does not apply to the iPhone Voice & Data Packages."

I think there is an 'iPhone Voice & Data" package (1 plan) which is not the same as a voice plan and additional data plan (2 plans).

so what do you tell them when you sign up, you want a separate plan for voice and data right

Can anyone confirm it would be a maximum of $100 to cancel data with Fido if the data plan is on a 3 year agreement?
