I have a brand new high energy furnace / ac etc in a 100 year old house.

The air cleaner sounds like it is ZAPPING bugs all the time....I know it is electrostatic and it is zapping dust...but it is borderline ridiculous as guests frequently are weirded out by the constant odd zapping sound.

Does anyone else have this issue...?

my parents house has that ..... it is newly installed?

maybe you have a lot of dust

ours was in our basement and we never really heard it unless we were in the furnace room for whatever reason

Did you get your ducts cleaned as well? Could be dust from the ducts if you haven't...

Is it a powered filter? If so, for sure it will "zap" the particles that cross the elements. That is how it traps the dirt.

Occasionally mine will act the same way. Cleaning them has always solved the problem for me.

This is normal for electronic air filters. The zapping will decrease as the level of dust, etc. in your house decreases and/or the filter gets coated with enough dust that it's not effective anymore and you have to clean it.

Are your guests hanging out in the basement? I can't usually hear the zapping on the ground floor unless it's silent in the house.

Ours does the same thing and it was a nuisance at first. We have hardwood through-out so the sounds travels and echos. When it was first installed I had to turn off at night because it was so annoying if your used to absolute quiet.

Now a year later I hardly ever notice. About the only time is if Im the furnace room and it zaps something big. For guests, it could be a bit surprising if theyre not used to it.

My brother in law had one of these and the zapping drove everyone nuts so he disconnected it.

If the zapping is continual and nonstop the plates are arcing somewhere and could possibly cause a fire, turn it off and clean the plates. If it's just every few seconds or a few times a minute that is normal.
