Last night, before close, my wife and I went to the Superstore (on kenaston) to buy some groceries.

We bought a $6 package of "fresh Cod" and came home to cook it.

By the time we got home and started to prepare dinner, Superstore was closed (close at 6 on sundays in manitoba)

I took the fish out of the fridge and BAM! two little worms crawling around on the inside of the saran wrap package.

Worst ****** turn off ever, the package best before date is July 3.

I saved the fish in the orignial package and put it in two other bags in my fridge.

I am planning on calling them this morning and then bringing the fish back for a refund, but I am wondering what should I expect for them to keep my business there...besides a $6 refund?

They better recall all of the fish or i'm going to the local news myself.

That is gross but you do realize that's what happens when you eat fresh fish, right? Here's some info on worms: Round Worms in Fish (http://www.fao.org/wairdocs/tan/x5951e/x5951e01.htm)

I would just ask for a refund and avoid fish if it really bothers you. Otherwise, just be glad the fish they sell there is actually fresh:cheesygri

Its not rotten, it just has parasites. Fish aren't the cleanest creatures, especially cod. The worms were in the fish when it was alive.

I wouldn't eat it myself as well, but I don't think you're entitled to compensation. Its not like you found a human finger in there or something.

Worms in Cod is totally normal. If you really want to get the creeps, put the fresh cod in a hot pan and watch the surface with a magnifying glass.

Unfortunately the worms are inside the fish already when it was caught and QC can't detect it unless they actually open it up and clean it.

I guess you can try to complain and maybe they would give you a extra gift card or something.

I'd be pretty grossed out too, but that's how mother nature works. The store should be pretty good at giving you a refund.

You weren't going to eat the fish raw were you? Imagine going to an unscrupulous sushi house, would/do they sell wormy FRESH fish? (Do they have to freeze the fish first to kill worms?)

Would anyone here eat the fish after cooking it well? The heat would kill the worms, right, but personally I don't think I'd be able to eat it either, unless there was absolutely nothing else to eat.

you should sue for 1.. no, 100 million.

or just accept that fish has worms and you bought one with worms in it. Inspect your food better next time when your buying it.

Sashimi is flash frozen to kill all the worms and parasites before being served and consumed.

But honestly, I'm not sure what the big deal is here. I understand you think it's gross just because you saw the worms alive. But even with sashimi that's flash frozen, where do you think the "dead" worms end up? Yup, that's right, in your stomach, just like how the dead worms that were on your cod would have ended up after you cooked it thoroughly.

Nothing unusual to find a worm especially in cod or other white fish. If anything, chalk it up to learning something new about fish.

Found a worm in my fish one time too. Was fishing with a worm at the end of my rod, got a bite, brought it up (nice walleye) and there was only half my worm left on the hook. When I cut it open to filet it there was 1/2 a worm in it's throat.

That was so gross!! Can you imagine a worm inside a fish? :cheesygri

I definitely learned something. I never even thought about worms being in my fish. I generally buy it already fillet and deboned. I'd be pretty grossed out too if I saw worms crawling out of it.

I'd imagine the responses would be more vindictive if this fish was bought from an asian supermarket instead of Superstore.

Anyway, you'd be entitled for at least a refund, but I wouldn't expect much more than that. Things like this will be inevitable if the fish is truly fresh.

Hey, if the worms are dead from flash freezing or cooking then, its extra protein in my diet I guess. :D Unless it's a living tapeworm, or other intestinal parasite that I really don't want to deal with getting rid of after the fact.

DO IT! Manufacturers need to take responsibility for the products that they make!

God makes fish. Ring up the Man. There's no call center to contend with either (I believe they call it "prayer").

If He doesn't change, you can always change Manufacturers. Note some Manufacturers out there don't carry complete meat lines...e.g. some don't carry pork or beef.

Sorry bud, but it sometimes happens. I worked with a chef once and had the same thing happen to a customer, as i was grossed out by this the chef ( a friend of mine) assured me this thing happens , cause fish eat worms, and sometimes during the cleaning process those little wormies dont get washed away.

Yup, most of us are pretty ignorant of where our food comes from now that it comes in neat little clean containers and we forget they were once parts of animals.

I'd be grossed out by wormy fish as well even though I know its just a natural occurance. heck, I know spiders and bugs are normal but they're still gross. Just the way we are.

it happens, im sure they'd refund and give you some credit towards next grocery purchase (to compensate for travel) without a hassle ... but seriously... do you really wanna stop buying your groceries from there when its normally 10% cheaper than Safeway?

what? that's bs. How are they not washed away? if a person is a chef, you'd think they'd go to every measure they could to make sure the insides were thoroughly cleaned. I can't imagine a reputable chef letting a worm just go amiss.

When I was a lot younger I would help gut and clean squid for a family restaurant. I thought it was so awesome finding little fish inside some of them.

Yeah I went and got a refund and didn't bother making a fuss out of it.

One CSR was grossed out the other was like ... "oh its cod, they are a carrier of worms, it happens it's no big deal..."

so i told her feel free to take it home to her family and bbq it up... she declined.

I did learn something in this whole process. I will check more carefully next time I buy fish.

I would have no problem catching a fish and gutting it, to find worms, and then eat it. Its just buying it at a grocer in a neat little package then to find worms... gross. oh well

the whole time I was thinking a worm like an earth worm. Did a little more research and read about how cod's have actual parasite type worms in them. I'm officially turned off of cod. After reading about it, I just can't look at it the same way again.

Y'all know me. Know how I earn a livin'. I'll catch this bird for you, but it ain't gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not like going down the pond chasin' bluegills and tommycods. This shark, swallow you whole. Little shakin', little tenderizin', an' down you go.

Ten thousand dollars for me by myself. For that you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing.

Stay away from other fish too...They are particularly common in white fish (cod, haddock, flounder, sole, and halibut), but I've also seen them in swordfish and monkfish.

Cod fish is notorious for having worms. At the processing plant, the fillets are placed lighted tables and the worms are plucked out with tweezers. Sounds like they missed a few in this case. As long as it's well cooked, there are no worries...just aesthetic. As you can imagine, cod isn't typically used for raw fish dishes such as sushi unless it's farmed or flash frozen to make it relatively 'worm-free'
