I'm about to install some new shingles. Is it code in Toronto to have 3 feet of ice and water shield along all edges? For example, do I need to build that into the quote, or is it standard?

I believe it is a Provincial code requirement and regardless, you should have at least 3 feet and if it is a shallow pitch roof, you should have more (6 ft minimum) and if you have any valleys, you should have some there too. Do not skimp here.

Ice and water shield around all the edges, valleys, around vents, chimney. Then Typar RoofWrap 30 for the rest of the roof. Tar paper is so yesterday's news.

Better yet, ice and water shield over the whole roof.

I did an ice and water shield over the entire roof as well. After the new shingles were installed, I can hardly hear the heavy rain on the roof. It is when it wacks against the window I hear it lol :D

I read somewhere that it is now code in Quebec to install ice and water shield over the entire roof.

If I ever install another new asphalt shingle roof, that's what I'll do as well. Except for this house I'm in now that I want to sell soon, the next roof I'll install will be steel, and it should be the last roof I need.

I'd install steel here as well, but buyers don't value a steel roof. I'm going to have to put another layer of asphalt over this roof to pretty it up, just to have the next owner strip both layers off in 10-15 years. Dumb.
