Just a quick question to you guys; do employment agencies like Adecco check all the references if you provide them with any( even if it's McDonalds or something ?), and how often do they check ? and what if I don't have any references available, will they still take me ? Would agencies be good for a high-school graduate like me with no real professional experience ? thanks

I could be wrong but I was under the impression that employment agencies do not check references at all. Once they find you a position with an employer, then that employer is the one who checks your references.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
And I don't think you'll have much luck with an employment agency if you have no experience, they prefer to deal with experienced people. Your best bet is to apply to jobs directly.
I have never provided any references when applying to a job, generally the employer will not care about your references until after they decide to hire you if at all.

I went through Adecco and Manpower recently and both check references. They prefer experience but it doesn't hurt to give it a shot. If its McDonald's then that's good because it can show that you are good at standing for long periods of time and you have customer service experience. They both test you on a variety of skills anyway so they can determine what you would be suited best for.

try AppleOne, they can get u jobs that can require no experience at all like General Labour or other types of temporary jobs. they pay better thru agencies too i think

I always thought agencies are supposed to help people without references or little-no work experience. There's no point going to an agency when you have references.

If you have work experience why even bother with an agency? Apply directly to companies you think you'd be interested in working for. Browse every career section of every website you come across that looks interesting. I'm not really sure how agencies work but I'm fairly positive they take a percentage of your salary for any job they find you.

If you worked with an agency before? Can you put them down as a reference or the place you actually worked at? (for assignments less then a month long)
and yes they do check references initially before even giving you assignments and yes they also take a portion of your pay, but the pay is much better than minimum wage so its still good in the end

Please let us know your overall experience after going to AppleOne. I haven't been there but I think they will ask general questions and more of an informal type of interview. Asking about yourself, skill sets, and so on.

I had plenty of work experience before I met up with my recruiter. And it's b/c of that experience that I got a job so quickly. Employers trust agencies with finding good candidates for them (otherwise they end up looking bad). On the other hand when I spoke with my recruiter about referring a friend of mine with limited work experience/references, she said that was no problem either. She's had a lot of experience finding work for people with limited resumes, or "moms" who have been out of work for years. There are many entry-level jobs available through agencies, and some that require little-to-no experience (general labour, general office, data entry, retail, call centre, warehouse etc...). And then there are large corporations who require that candidates be properly screened and have enough prior experience for jobs in the financial, HR, IT, and marketing sectors. Finding candidates for the latter may be difficult if not for agencies, esp. if your talking about salaries that can start in the $80K range.
It's all about connections. Many companies/employers go through employment service agencies in order to find good candidates for the job (and many only go through agencies). It saves the companies time and money in the long run, without having to worry so much about recruitment, training, turnover, and benefits. Agencies like Adecco to all the "heavy lifting" in that sense. The amount of solicited/unsolicited resumes some of these companies may get take time and effort to go through, and are most often passed aside. When an employer goes through an agency, they know that the agency does their homework in regards to finding the best match for the job.
The employer/company pays the employment agency a fee in order to get this service. No commission taken directly out of your weekly paycheque by employment agencies (at least not legit ones). It's the employer that pays for employment agency fees. You'll be told how much an assignment will pay before you accept the temp job. The business also has to pay a placement fee if the position moves from temp to perm.

How much (%) will the agency get if they find you a job for $80,000? Is it 10% or more?

References: Recruiters are only human. Checking references is definitely a part of procedure. But sometimes if you make a good impression, they'll skip that step. Or if you totally messed up the interview and they don't want to bother getting you a job, they definitely won't check. There's also the case of them just being lazy and not bothering to check, especially if they keep getting voicemail.
If you don't have references, it highlights how inexperienced you are. It also raises suspicion that you didn't get along with your boss. Not having references will definitely hurt your chances as you're competing with other candidates who do have references. You better score really well on any tests they give you and smile like hell at the interview.
Pay cut is around 1/3 if you're paid by the hour. For salary it's a fee equal to at least 25% of first year salary.

OK guys; I went to AppleOne, it wasn't anything special, just filled one a bunch of previous employment papers and signed few sheets here and there, then sat down with the recruiter, she went over all the stuff and THEN she asked me if I had any references; I said I previously worked at this place but they didn't/wouldn't provide me with any references, so she said, I'm sorry we will not assist you if you have at least 2 references which they can contact, and this is how it all ended.
I wasn't surprised since someone here has previously mentioned that you need at least 2 work references for any agency as far as I know.
So, I'm asking you guys, do you know any agencies that don't require/ask for any references ? or I guess I'm just gonna have to hit the streets again and apply at more stores, hopefully something will come up soon, otherwise I'm dead if I won't find a job in the next 2 weeks. Thanks

I want to know as well.
Also, does anyone know any agencies where you can PAY for a fee and they don't require references. I'm willing to pay for a fee to exchange for having no references/little work experience.

Its a bad idea to fake a reference. It will hurt you in the long run if they find out. I hate providing references myself; I have two reference letters and one professional contact and a personal one. The agency/recruiter didn't say anything.
If you really struggle with this I suggest asking a friend or teacher who knows you well or someone whom you've done any kind of project/work for - paid or not. Also try to volunteer with a organization and get a reference from them.
