Hello RFD,

My garage door opener seem to have stopped working, I am unsure what the problem is. So I will try to give us much detail as possible.

The garage door opener I am using is the Sears Garage Door opener (102 1499A). (Chamberlain)

The diagnostic chart says that it is either an motor Overheat or a RPM sensor failure. However, the symptoms I am getting are different from what it is listed. It says Motor overheat , simply unplug and replug; Did not work.
It says RPM Sensor failure would require the door to move up some inches, however it does not move at all.

I am also unsure if the sensors are working intact. I have tried cleaning them, aligning them , but one of the sensors do not grow. I am unsure if the sensor is broken or not. I have tried rewiring the sensor, still nothing.

Overall, the only thing that happens when I tried to open the door, is one tick noise from the machine.

Also the light on the unit stopped working. (Tried different lightbulbs)
I have also tried reprogramming the unit, but with no hope.
I have tried realigning the manual door opening rope to the socket.

I have tried calling them, but there is no REAL person to talk to. All automated.

I am unsure what to do, It is either replace the unit, or purchase an RPG sensor, safety sensor and a logic board and hope for the best.

Parts will cost about $100+ dollars.

Any help would be appreciated.

You need a light on both sensors.

If there is no light, then they cannot see each other.

If they cannot see each other then the opener will not close the door. (it will however open).

If it cannot close the door it will flash the lightbulbs about 5 or 6 times.

If they cannot see each other:

a) they are out of alignment
b) something is obstructing their view
c) a bad connection
d) sunlight shining directly into one of the sensors
e) broken sensor

Thank you for a response.

I am not sure whats wrong with the light, we have tried a couple of lightbulbs , I think the wiring/ logic board might have failed on the light itself. I have tried realigning the sensors, but the green one does not sense anything.

The door will not close or open.

I think the sensor is broken. But I am unsure why the diagnostic chart would tell me something else is the problem.

I was wondering if there is any way to disconnect the sensors and not use them at all.

Once again, thank you for your response.

No, that would technically be 'illegal'. The sensors have been a requirement for about 20 years.

I would recommend just replacing the opener entirely.

Yeah don't override the sensors, the life they save could your very own. It could be that they need to be leveled again because the vibration of the rails or the wiring needs to be replaced. Not too difficult to do.
