I am an IT contractor right now. I, probably, send out up to 10 applications a day.

10 resumes per day? Impressive. Do you tailor your resume according to the job postings or sending out a generic resume...
I'll be graduating soon and couldn't find a lot entry level jobs out there. I'm sending like 1 resume every 2-3 weeks.

I, generally, tailor the resume to fit the job description. Of course, thereafter, make sure my experience within my resume matches what I claim. I am used to doing this as you have to match the "Statement of Merit Criteria" when you apply for government jobs or you could get screened out.

I usually pull 5-10 a day.
I look for businesses in my area which interest me and I at least draft up an original cover letter for each application.
Sometimes I cheat a bit and cookie cutter the cover letters though.
If it's a job I'm REALLY interested in though I'll revamp my entire resume to what the job requires.

how do you guys find so many suitable positions to apply to.. i mean 10 a day for a week is already 70 different companies.

agree...I have been applying to 2 a week, maybe I am picky, I have turned down a couple because they were not what they made them out to be. I have noticed an increase in the amount of jobs I have found interesting. This week I sent 4 out with 3 more to finish this weekend. I tailor each one extensively a process that takes me 3 - 4 hrs for perfection.

You have to cast a wide net.
Apply to as many as possbile and tailor each resume to match the requirements.

I would be difficult IMO to apply consistently of 10/day over the longer term. Maybe for a week, a couple of days, 10 days, but unless one is truly just trying to go for anything, it really won't match the exerience, education, field, etc.
And if you apply for too many in one company, it might look a little suspect, or actually limit your chances.
I remember when I was looking, I was averaging about 3-day for a few weeks, slow it down, then try to hit that number again. Its pretty much a full-time job at times.

Are you guys just throwing it into mosnter and workopolis, or going in person to these businesses?

I think it really depends on how much experience you have. If you are a recent grad with little to no experience (+have a useless degree) I don't see how 10 a day is possible since you are unqualified for pretty much everything especially now. Even for those rare jobs you ARE somewhat qualified for there are thousands of applicants for those jobs who are very qualified-overqualified for these positions.

Hmm thanks to your idea, I actually checked out the Craigslist job postings. Are they not legit?

+1 how can you even find that many job postings? im looking in toronto, vancouver and montreal and cant find that many postings
also about the craigslist job - dont expect a great job with benefits - usually this is where companies advertise for short term contract jobs and can be very sketchy

I agree, I just spoke to someone who applied to an EA job on CG who then got an email back saying she should go to Jdate and ChristianSingles.com for the "next steps".

Why not, I got a pretty decent job through Craig's List, it paid $15/hr and they flew me out to Toronto for training. Though it was just a one month contract.
It isn't hard to read through some of the BS that is up on there. As it stands I know more people (3) that got a job through Craig's List versus Monster/Workopolis/News Paper (0).

I was just, recently, recruited. The recruiter found my CV on Monster.ca. Funny, in the past, I did not like using Monster. However, since I graduated from college, Monster has been fairly useful.

There certainly a lot of illegitimate spammers on Craigslist, but also some very decent employers posting on there. You have to be careful and use your judgment when considering job opportunities on Craigslist though - if they don't list an employer and say anything about "make 6 figures instantly", it's usually a red flag (and not in "red flag deal" kinda way).
I've gotten many contract and even my past two full-time (legitimate, professional, full benefits, etc) jobs off Craiglist. I personally know that HR likes to include Craigslist in their hiring/posting mix since it's free and easy to post, unlike many of the bigger sites. If they don't list a company, legitimate company email, contact information, then it's not a good sign.
Hope that helps. Now, back to Craigslist browsing.. ;)

100? Never! I don't think there are that many jobs I'd find interesting to devote 9-5 everyday to. Have you?

You also have to be careful about the kind of companies advertising their jobs there. Why don't they have a budget to do it professionally? Will they have the funds to pay my salary??

Yeah I've been sending out 5-10 per week for the past six weeks. I quickly found out that Monster and Workopolis are a failure cause I just get spammed for "American Income Jobs" or "Register here for more job listings"
Anyways, now I just use Indeed.ca .... the google for job searches!
Happy Hunting!

my current job search is pretty slow.
About 1 resume a week. That's only b/c i have a decent job already. I'm just looking for an upgrade.

I put out about 5-6 resumes a week for 3 1/2 months before I found a job. I would not just apply for any job either, I had some specific things I was looking for. However because I was not eligible to collect EI due to working for a foreign employer for a year I couldn't be too picky.
If you are looking for something specific then obviously you are going to spend more time tayloring your marketing package then if you are just looking for a general entry level position.

Been awhile but at the time probably around 2-3 / wk. I was pretty lazy and just rehashed the "dear so-and-so" and "for the position of blah-blah-blah". :)
Guess it worked out :)
