This news article made me laugh out very loud.
Armed private yachts offering pirate-hunting cruises off Somalia
Rich Russians with money to burn can sign up for pirate-hunting cruises on armed private yachts off the Somali coast, the website Ananova reports. Wealthy punters pay $6,620 a day to patrol the most dangerous waters in the world hoping to be attacked by raiders.
When attacked, they retaliate with grenade launchers, machine guns and rocket launchers, says the Austrian business paper Wirtschaftsblatt. For an extra $9.45 a day they get an AK-47 machine gun, pictured, while 100 rounds of ammo cost $13.25.
They are also protected by a squad of former special forces. The yachts travel from Djibouti in Somalia to Mombasa in Kenya.
They deliberately cruise close to the coast at a speed of just five nautical miles in an attempt to attract the interest of pirates.

Sick or cool I can't think of anything else anyone has done that will help PREVENT piracy more than this. Pirate or not, you think they want to risk an RPG confrontation?

If attacked then you have right to defend yourself

Keep your dehumanizing military slang to yourself, lowlife.
You could have just as easily said 'pirates'. Instead you use the derogatory term in a long line of derogatory military terms in the long tradition of the US using such terms to denigrate and and designate local peoples worth less than their own.
Do you dare say Gook on this board? You'd rightly be strangled.
Ignorant pig.

Infact they already do, and not only for you poor 'whities', and what is your point? Is it justification for using the word here? Is it invalidation of the long tradition of the US military's denigrating terms for local peoples? Is it OMG UR BEING SO PC?
Go thump your chest some more. Some of you people struggle a great deal with aversive racism.

Racism yes - but is not piracy in effect racism also?
I do not see them attacking African boats.

As I said : 'Infact they already do, and what is your point?'
What was your point?
And what is it now?
This person used a term that is used as a racist and derogatory term, and one that is used to dehumanize as all racist terms are meant to do, for Somalis.
He could have easily denigrated only the pirates, who are criminals and are asking for what they get, whether it be being picked off by fat wealthy Russian men or being looted and murdered once back onshore by other pirates. They're looters, thieves and murderers, and deserve whose sympathy? Not mine, nor yours, nor anyone's.
But no, he decides to use a racist term that is used to ridicule all Somalis.
Does this make it easy for you? It is a modern equivalent of 'ni**er*'.
There's a scale out there for people like yourselves - the Modern Racism Scale developed by social psychologists concerned about aversive racists.

This thread reminds me of a picture I saw a few years ago, just after the US went into Iraq.
It was a picture of a bunch of US soldiers, laying in the sand. One of their faces was replaced with that of Elmer Fudd. The caption was something akin to "be vewy vewy qwiet. We're hunting Iwaqui's."
It was surely in bad taste but I had to chuckle at it. That crazy Mr. Fudd.

I don't think you "hunt" the pirates.
You use a honeypot strategy to entice them to attack you.
Then you defend yourself.
There is a big difference in that the pirates make the first move.

People like you said the same thing in the sixties. You are nothing new with your attempt at internet coy cleverness.
Is there some sort of selective learning applied in this cycle? Do these people have to be taught all over again every time they learn a new racial moniker that it's not OK, like spoiled children? Decade after decade, it certainly seems that way.

I know, so awesome. Not happy with the lame trophy shots you'd get with the military, huh? I hear you. Man, why even suggest the same for white thieves - wouldn't look so good up on the wall, you know? Get kinda gray around the eyes, you can see the imperfections after awhile. Look at Lenin.

many dont know that this piracy started off as fisherman protecting their waters from foreigners illegally fishing in their waters and reportedly western nations illegally dumping crap (nuclear waste? even) into their waters.

Damm Europeans!!! lol. j/k
Does not justify taking hostages for ransom, even if they were fishermen or not. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfiHHrBqRVA
This is sick because it should be the job of military professionals not marketed as a human hunt. Sure I would like to see the pirates killed if they are continuing to take ships and innocent people hostage but it should not be done in a "tourist cruise safari".
I wonder what international law is regarding this especially since it is in international waters.
Implications are scary. You could see video of pirate hunts on liveleak for example.

Why are people forgetting one fundamental fact - the people on the yacht are NOT attacking anyone. They are NOT hunting anyone.
I think everyone agrees that it is legally OK to defend yourself if attacked.

Never said it justified anything. Just posting about what I know about the origins of the pirates, not condoning their piracy.

There were may reasons that it started, you are very right that people felt the need to protect themselves and their way of life. Add to that the total lack of social structure on land and virtually no law enforcement, well it did fester.
That being said, whether this bait and shoot is ethical or not I still find that this might be the only thing to actually detour piracy. Right now there are very little consequences for their actions and the risk / reward is just to get too be a pirate in this area of the world.
I love boating and liveaboard cruisers are being taken hostage / killed just for sailing slowly enough to be caught. These people are not dumping toxic waste or fishing the waters clean.
