View Full Version : Stupid questions about Taiwanese Visas

OMG, I hope I didn't misinterpret what the Taiwanese govenrment website said, but it said something about proof of outbound ticket will be required in order to grant me a visa. It's a long story, but I actually don't have an outbound ticket for Taiwan yet. Something happened that prevented me from buying it and now I'll be arriving in Taipei from Seoul on June 29th. I thought I'll just figure out how to get out of Taipei once I get there, but now I'm worried they might deport me since I don't have an outbound ticket (currently trying to resolve this now, but not sure if I can get a confirmed flight in the next 48 hours or so). Anyone here ever tried flying to Taipei without an outbound ticket and successfully made it through customs? Btw, I hold a Canadian passport.

I think Canadians can get a "visa on arrival" in Taiwan, which is what you are alluding to.

I think it's kind of rare that immigration would actually check your outbound tickets if you have a western passport (although it can happen). It may be more of a problem with the airline if you don't have an outgoing ticket. They could simply refuse to let you board the flight.

Generally it is required for any foreigner to have an outgoing ticket pretty much going to any country.

Since you seem to be travelling the world, make sure you got all your tickets done right.

I feel like a ****ing idiot for trusting my friend. It's a really long story, but I was trying to get my plans to work with his and now I find myself without much time to get another flight booked. Anyways, thx for the info and I'll try to get something done in the next 24 hours .

Many countries have a requirement of an outbound ticket. However, frequently it's not checked.

They may only apply it is they have some reason to believe you might stay or if your skin is the wrong colour, etc.

However, I don't have any experience with Taiwan and don't know how strictly they enforce it.

Pretty much every country requires proof of an outbound ticket. If you show up with a Canadian passport don't worry too much about it. They likely won't care.

About 75% of the time I visit Taiwan, the customs officers asks for proof of departing travel. I am not sure what happens if you don't have proof of departing travel, but I would guess it may mean you don't get in!

Canadian Passport has 30-day entry to Taiwan with NO visa required
(never been asked for outbound ticket either)

For longer stay, you do need visa

Travel Report for Taiwan

A valid Canadian passport is required for Canadians intending to visit Taiwan. The passport must be valid for at least six months at the time of entry. An onward or return ticket is also required. Canadians who fail to meet these requirements will be refused entry or will be deported by local immigration authorities.
The Government of the People's Republic of China has modified requirements for the issuance of visas to Canadian citizens born in Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan. Visas will no longer be issued to Canadian passport holders whose place of birth is inscribed as Hong Kong HKG, Macao MAC, or (city name) TWN. Canadian passports issued to Canadians born in Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan are now issued only with the place of birth. There will no longer be a three letter country code.

Passengers will be requested to undergo unobtrusive temperature screening upon arrival at the international ports or airports. Travellers arriving from China, Macao and other countries and regions affected by Avian Flu will be given a form as a reminder to take their temperature for 10 consecutive days. Persons with flu-like symptoms (fever, muscle ache, lethargy, and sore throat) must report to a hospital.

It is illegal to work in Taiwan without a work permit. Those who are caught working illegally, even for one day, will be fined and deported. They subsequently will not be allowed to return to Taiwan for at least five years.

Tourist Visa: Not required (for stays less than 30 days)
Business Visa: Not required (for stays less than 30 days)
Student Visa: Required
Working Visa: Required

Thx for the help again guys. I just got a flight booked, but it said I'll need to wait 24 hours for it to be confirmed. I guess I'll just print out the receipt and pray that will be enough if they do check.

How long are you staying in Taiwan? I remember they keep changing the requirements, but last I remember was either 21 or 28 days with Canadian passport without a visa, beyond that, you would also need a visa.

i honestly doubt they'd kick you out. Since you have CAN passport, you qualify for the tourist visa. They might ask you a whole bunch of questions. Just say you didn't know and that you need to be back in Canada for work within 30 days and that you plan on buying a ticket in Taiwan because it's cheaper or some other reason. I can imagine that it'll be a hassle, but i doubt they'd deny you in.

If you are caught in such a situation, make a whole bunch of reasons that are convincing to them that you won't be staying longer than what you are qualified ... or that you will get an outbound ticket and that you have the money to do it.

I think you worried too much. I just came back from a trip to Taiwan and I don't recall the customs there ever check my return ticket.

Like you I also hold a Canadian passport.

I was in Taiwan in Febuary. Visa exempt up to 30 days, and they did not ask for proof of outgoing ticket.
