LF: Home Theatre with Floating Shelves, Hidden Wires

I saw a picture posted on another website and am interested in finding someone that can provide an opinion on this setup. Basically TV is mounted on the wall, wires run behind the wall to equipment that is on floating shelves. Looks very neat and tidy. How difficult would it be to do on your own? Would it be sturdy enough to support a receiver or dvd player?

I've not seen the picture but it I can't see it being too hard. Probably the hardest part is to get an electrician to have a plug around where the TV should be on the top. Because I don't believe you are allowed to run the black power plug cables through the wall.
Otherwise cut a hole from the area behind the TV and where the shelf will be fish all your wires through this, and terminate them all to faceplates. They claim to support up to 100 lbs, but I have a set that I use for DVD storage and I am not sure I would want to but 100 lbs on it!

Just make sure the shelf is mounted to studs. I had some ikea lack shelfs mounted to a stud on only one side and drywall anchor on the other and it is not strong enough for a received, maybe dvd player.

I think the main issue would be finding a shelf deep enough for your equipment.

Thanks for the help... I noticed they had prefabricated floating shelves at Lowes, might have to look a little more into it. If I can find a picture I will post.

I've done several for clients.

Just be very very very sure that whatever you get will be deep enough to hold your largest component. Most AV receivers require about 18" depth with cables.

Also keep in mind that you will have this shelf sticking out at least 18" from the wall and hope that it is not in the way of anything.


There is a furniture system from Vantage Point called EVO. It essentially does all the same thing. It's pretty nice. We sell this too.
