How many people who travel or book hotels actually bring their own bed materials? Is it actually needed because i'm being really paranoid about the comforter, bed sheet/spread, pillows, bed bug etc they supply. After reading some stories and seeing that they do not wash the comforter or bed sheets/spread unless it is dirty makes me really disgusted.

Any tips or stories will be appreciated

Thanks!!

I really don't think it's that big of a deal. It can't be worse than eating out, and we all do that on occasion. Sometimes I might bring my own sheet or a certain pillow just because I'm used to it and feel most comfortable, but not because of cleanliness concerns.

Yea, what about that room carpet too. Would you put you bare feet on it? The bathrooms are the things that bother me. Ever find a hair in the shower or bathtub? Did they really clean it? I also hate the fact that someone has touched the toilet paper, how can you be sure that someone did not unroll it and stick something in the layers. What happens if you do not tip the housekeepers every day? Do they do something to your room?
Have a nice stay

Take a blacklight with you and see how many stains you can find on the bed / bathroom.

just check tripadvisor.com to see if anyone had comments on it. i wouldn't let it ruin a trip. i do prefer wearing shoes on the carpet though, or slippers at least.

I was being facetious.

Tripadvisor has been under the microscope lately over false reports and even worse, poor reporting. The other issue is tripadvisor not checking or validating their reviews. They are being accused of allowing hotels to "up" their ratings by employee or family reviews skew the tally. This is not just opinion or internet blogging, it has been reported by news agencies etc.
Just be careful and don't use tripadvisor as your sole source of information.

Well from what you have provided me earlier it does sound about right from what I read and saw on some documentary lol.

So what would you prefer as a good source of review for hotels (Fairmont Royal York hotel to be specific)?

Thanks for everyone's help and tips!!

For the most part, the big 4-5 star hotels are pretty clean. I make it a habit of taking the comforter off the bed though, regardless of where I stay.

Just think of all the raunchy sex that has happened on that 4 or 5 star bed. Business execs away from their wives have hired callgirls and have done the nasty with whips and chains and god knows what else in that very room you're staying in. The porn channels on the hotel TVs are very popular too for those who were more interested in um, solo pursuits!

I've stayed in many many hotels from 1 star to 4 star and never brought anything. I've also never run into a situation when I've needed to bring my own bedding or towels. I've seen some sad threadbare towels and sheets but never anything that I had to avoid using.

That being said I love the Holiday Inn Express. Amazing place, great towels and bedding.

to me it all depends on the actual workers cleaning the place....i have stayed in a 2 star hotel and had some of the cleanest, fresh smelling room around... i have also stayed in a 5 star hotel that looked like it was cleaned by a 10 year old...i dont bring anything myself....BUT i do a quick inspection for bed bugs or dirt in the bathroom....i never put my bags on the bed or sit on it untill i have done so

You know, you can become psychotic if you sweat this stuff. Read a variety of reviews. Look at where the reviewers are from as people from different parts of the world have different expectations.
Hotels, no matter where, are inspected and licenses are provided sand infractions are noted.
