Working at GAP.

Hey everyone, I have a one on one interview at GAP coming up next friday.
I was wondering if anyone who has worked at group could give me advice on working for the company, or if anyone could give me advice for the internview.

Is it required to wear the company's clothing while employed there? Is there anything recommended to mention to the hiring managers during the interview?

If they called you to the interview, your most likely hired. At the interview there gonna ask some basic questions and the only reason you wont be hired is if your retarted. No, you do not need to wear there clothing when you go to the interview. Make sure you bring your some identification cards and your SIN#.

Thanks for the advice you guys... haha Starrup, hopefully I will get the job. Also, I did hear that the company didn't really give a **** about the employee's. We'll see what the conditions are like when I get there.

I hope Im not too late but GAP will care how you treat your customers, there stuff like clothes etc and how well you listen to their intructions, trust me because I worked at BK and I recently got fired because I didnt do what I stated above.

Back when I was working there I got $1.50 above minimum wage. Most places gave minimum wage or a $1 above it.

The only ****** part is the reduced hours during slow times. You'll be working one shift a week, sometimes even once every other week. But thats like most retail/service places.

Otherwise I found them to be okay as long as you weren't a total slacker. MY favorite part was the 7am shifts... We'd spend the 2.5 hours before opening ripping open stock. After we finish we'd take the boxes to the garbage room and took our sweet ass time. It was pretty much our undisclosed 15 minute break. To make it better there was a coffee/pastry shop that would open @ 8am.

So that's why when I go into a GAP store, I have to ask them to help me instead of them coming to me and asking if I need help?

But @ OP, you perhaps want to mention that you are able to sell product and that you are comfortable with "suggesting" products that customers should buy. As an example if you are helping a customer with a pair of jeans mention that there is a wide selection of belts available too. The majority of clothing stores I believe are still evaluated on Sales Per Hour, so as long as you show that you are able to meet said quotas you shouldn't have any problem getting a job. I also believe the Gap was/still is a commission based store (if its not, damn I haven't shopped there in a long time, mainly because the majority of people that work there are retards and won't help you if you need help, and hell if your a man and you need god damn khakis well then you better need help because honestly what man can proudly say they know a thing or two about clothes shopping....)

I dont know what GAP you go to but the when were I went a couple of weeks ago, there employees ran right up to me when I entered the store. Also youre giving the OP good advice on Sales Per Hour, it forces and encourages you to do you job.

when i worked at the gap it wasnt commission based. however they want you to sell sell sell still because if the store doesn't meet the goal for the day then they can't give ppl hours.

at BR however, you have to meet your individual sales goals, or else you don't get hours.

First of all, thanks for all the reply's form everyone.

Now, I heard that during the interview, the manager hiring you will take you around the store and ask you questions about what you see (the presentation of the jeans, the neatness of the store, the way the shirts are folded rather than hung to emphasize the denim and colours, etc), and that they give you a sheet of questions that you have to find the answers to, which the sales associates would help you with.

Did anyone go through this kind of interview?

Also, I worked with a few companies in the past, and I have seasonal retail experience at Indigo (Books and Music) and Sears, so should I ask for compensation higher than minimum wage?

If they ask me how much I epect to be paid, I feel weird saying I hope to be paid accordingly based on my eperience, but I feel I might deserve more than minimum wage, seeing as they hire people with hardly any eperience.

I dont know about the questions that they MIGHT ask you but common, it cant be that hard? I mean I've seen the dumbest people work at retail stores, the best advice I can give you is to pay attention during your interview.
Now regarding your pay, the best thing you can say is that you have work experience working at Indigo or where ever else you stated but other than that, its up to the manager becuase they have leverage and you dont. My advice is if you get the job at minimum wage, work your @ss of and hope your manager sees it.
Also, ask your manager if the GAP at the City Centre is hiring if you do get hired. Thx in Advance.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of dumb people in retail, still do. I should be fine. I don't really see why I wouldn't get the job. They just need to see if I communicate well and are friendly and what not, which I am, so I'm alright.

So, turns out the interview was a group interview! lol I didn't know until I got there. I think it went well. I was dressed appropiately and what not, so we'll see if they give a call back.

My best friend worked at the Gap while we studied and she told me that all first interviews are peer interviews, and that they will call the three references they asked you to list. If they like you based on the first impression, they will call you in for a personal interview she said. There is trainings and in-services she says you have to attend throughout the year. Also, when she worked there, her commision wasn't on her paycheque. Rather, it was accumulated in an account, that was to be used to buy their clothes to wear at work. Don't know if that's the same experience as other Gap employees here...

They gave me a good wage which corresponded really well with my experience and what I was hoping for, so I'm excited. Thanks so much for all of the advice everyone.

Good luck to anyone that aspires to work at Gap. My advice is to apply constantly on the website. I sent a new application in almost everyday, althought, I don't think it made a difference lol.

During the interview, (since it's in most cases a group interview) I recommend being very personable, don't stay directly in business interview mode throuhgout, but rather be friendly and smile and stuff when you're telling your story. They look to see how you'll be with their customers, but more so to see if you'll mesh well with their team, so be nice, say bye to everyone, things like that. I believe they hire based on initiative to want to do your best job in their store, rather than just experience.

lol, the questions aren't that long in comparison to the Old Navy questions! Oh my gosh, THOSE are long. This one is only like 15 minutes!

Congrats in getting your job at GAP. One thing I can tell you is not to spend all your money on your GF, trust me I did that and while it was fun at the time, it now seems stupid. :lol:
