I rent an apartment for almost 3 years, now the building is going under some renovation. The whole pipe systems is getting changed ,so since beginning of the month many days a week water gets cut during the day but not only that, workers get into the suites all the time and make tons of noise making holes , there are holes in the kitchen and the washroom and the dust is all over the place.
Since we are not at home during the day when they are working at the beginning I didn't mind but I am getting really upset with the whole mess. Now it looks like the work will take longer that they expected.
Some people are telling me I should get a rent discount because the hassle that I'm going thru but I would like to know if that is a normal rule. So I am considering telling my manager that he should give me discount or I would consider moving. But that is not something that I want to do, because the location ..just few block from work..and I really like the area but due to the circumstances I would like to be compensated somehow for all the trouble that this is creating for me.

Something similar is happening to me. I live in a high rise, and they have been renovating the unit above me for the last month and a half. Starting at 8am every day there is pounding, drilling, and rattling directly above my head. It's so loud that I have to literally stop any phone calls since I can't hear the other person on the line. I was fine with it at first since I understand they need to perform routine maintenance, however, the days I've been home during the day have been absolute torture. I was sick last week couldn't get a wink of sleep between 8 and 5 because of the non-stop racket. It's awful not being able to hear yourself think in your own home, especially for such a long period of time :(

Understandable how you feel. You like the location, so try to find another one near it, else suck it up.
On the rent discount, don't know laws wherever you are, but in Quebec you can ask for a rent discount. Best guess is it's going to be up to the manager, if he doesn't like you he won't, and if there is a law that would force him he'd just try to get revenge on you thereafter.

Tough it out, I'd say. As a person who has moved quite a lot in my younger days, I know what a hassle it is unless you've been contemplating a move for a while before the proverbial straw, then I'd say your answer is quite clear. I've had to endure city construction pretty much every summer for 3 years when I was living on a major artery of Toronto during a time when I was working night shifts but I eventually adapted to the noise.
Weigh the pros and cons and you'll see which is the better choice. At face value, I would say this is a minor inconvenience at best.
