Fail, they're not the second most expensive in the world. London is more expensive.

Leave 'the center of the universe' stuff to Toronto :D

Parking rates across Canada continue to soar despite the economic recession and Calgary is second only to New York in monthly North American parking costs, says a survey released today. (from OP linked article)

You need to read a little bit closer, yes? Despite what popular media tells us, last time I checked, North America does not constitute "the World". :D

Looking at monthly median rates, Calgary may have (at this point) the second most expensive monthly median parking rates in North America but by no means the second most expensive in the world - no where close.

M-e-X-x is correct - London (city) parking rate for it's most expensive parking district hovers around 1050 USD. London (west end) sits at 956 USD and Amsterdam at 805 USD. Outside of Europe, Hong Kong's price for it's priciest parking district is roughly 748 USD.

Calgary doesn't even break into the Top 11.

Damn. I'm not getting the full value of my parking stall. I live close to downtown and I charge my parking space for less than half that. I guess it's time to hike up my rates.

Parking prices in downtown Calgary are brutal - there's no doubt about it.

I pay $485 a month for my spot.

Indeed. I know someone that found a spot for a fraction of that so now they avoid the daily transit fee.

Yeah but parking downtown in Calgary (meters) is free after 6pm on weekdays, free on sundays, and free on holidays. Considering most Calgarians don't have to pay much parking when they are going out in the city other than working downtown, I'd say parking is more expensive in other cities where meters run till 9pm or later every day of the week and people are actually doing things downtown and have to pay that parking.

They need to institute that or no one goes downtown on those days lol... It's already the fleeing of the ant hill every weekday at 4pm.

Actually are those days still free even after the change to the new parking system?

Even with those free days, there isn't much reason to go downtown in Calgary. The only time those free meter days helped me is when going to Chinatown.

Which new parking system are you talking about?

Pretty much. That's why it fills up early around 9ish.
