Hi

I recently moved into a new apartment in Edmonton, which happens to be on the first floor. At the time the apartment had no problems so I agreed to sign a one year lease and paid a deposit. But only a couple of days after, bugs started to appear on the carpet. I talked to the landlord and they told me that the previous owners must of not clean up enough. The bugs I'm referring to are black carpet beetles. The landlord temporarily moved me into another suite while they are spraying the room. The options that the landlord gave me were either to move to the second floor and pay an extra $50 every month or go back to the suite that i originally rented. Any advice as to what I can do??? i.e. lease agreement voided, or can I ask for a discount or can I get some of my deposit back??? Any advice is appreciated.

Here's some links to the pics of the bugs i'm referring to:

Thanks.

cute little critters.
most likely u wount b able to get anything out of this.
personally i think u should move up a floor, the 50$ increase would suggest a balcony? balcony's r sexy.

i used to live in a basement , then moved to 3rd floor. SOOOO much better.

ill ask a friend of mine whos a property manager, ill see what she has to say, and ill get bk to u sometimes soon :)

I agree

consider the $50 a health investment

I don't think a bug infestation is grounds for terminating a lease. Your landlord is doing everything to exterminate the bugs and temporarilly relocate you (at no additional cost?). Sounds like you have a good landlord, something that is often difficult to find.

Read your lease and the tenancy act relevant to your province. Here is the one for BC: http://www.bclaws.ca/Recon/document/freeside/--%20r%20--/residential%20tenancy%20act%20%20sbc%202002%20%20c .%2078/00_02078_01.xml

Wait, wait: if you are seriously considering moving to another suite and paying an additional 50 bucks, make sure that the new suite isn't plagued with the same problems.

It would totally suck to pay 50 bucks only to find out you haven't really improved anything.

Make sure to check all your spices for bugs.

We were finding similar beetles all over our home (kitchen mostly), and were cleaning everything like mad. Then one day I find out that a bag of coriander seeds was infested! The little suckers were hatching out of the seeds! (purchased many months ago in bulk from an indian food market)

I used to live on the fourteenth floor of a an apartment building and the place was infested with cockroaches.

If you clean the apartment and make sure to keep food off the floor and out of sight the bugs will go next door to your neighbors...
