I got a question for you guys. I just got my 2008 year end total rewards statement (yeah…took them long enough) and the statement says my employer calculated my net salary and benefits included the EI, CPP, and ON health tax they paid to the government to hire me. I had thought those were the cost of doing business and hiring somebody vs my net reward/benefit? It sure makes it look like they paid me more then they really did though.

They are. Sounds like a "Look how great is it to be working here" statement.

One way to see what the benefits are worth, see what you would you would have to pay without them. For example, how much do you spend on dental expenses that would otherwise be covered by a dental plan, amount that your work covers in pension, amount of pay that you got on vacation, etc. Often, you will find that it is quite substantial.
I should mention though that employers do have a tendency to exaggerate how great it is to work as pointed above, but as I said, there is much more cost than just the employee's salary.
