Hello,
I am currently pursuing the CMA designation, having just written the entrance exam. I was just curious if anyone was doing the CPFA designation (Chartered Public Finance Accountant)? What are your thoughts on the designation and do you think its worth it? I want to work in the public sector or non profit so I may pursue the CPFA after the SLP.
Also, anyone doing an MBA instead of the SLP? And at what university will you be doing it at?
Thanks.

CPFA (Chartered Public Finance Accountant), sounds like a fancy name for CFA/CPA combo ?

They are actually completely different. CPFA originated from the UK and was recently approved by the Comptroller General of Canada. It's offered by CMA Canada and its focused on accounting in government.

hmm....if it requires the same amount of work to achieve CMA/CGA than i would forget about it.
BUT....it certainly doesnt hurt to include CMA & CPFA on your resume if your keen you getting it. may give you a slight edge on paper.
IMHO though, i think its not worth it. not many people know about it outside accounting, or even in the profession. you should only pursue the designation if your employer will sponsor you or if its required.

To be honest, I think MBA has more impact than CFPA (unless you're in the government). But if you're trying to stay in the corporate world, then CMA/MBA is the "arguably" best way to go. Many CMAs also have MBA due to its similar case approach. It's also the most widely recognized post grad degree and has the best chances of moving up quicker.
So unless you'll stick in the government, CMA/MBA is a more recognized combination.

Achieve two designations simultaneously
http://www.cma-ontario.org/index.cfm?ci_id=7481&la_id=1
Also:
http://www.cma-ontario.org/index.cfm/ci_id/14400/la_id/1.htm
The correct order is:
1. MBA - pick one of the CMA accredited programs (WLU in KW also qualifies)
2. CMA entrance exam - waived
3. CMA SLP - regular (2 yrs.) or accelerated (10 mths., starts in Sep. 2009)

From my understanding the CFPA is a money grab by the CMA institute. The annual fees are paid by the government for their employees and essentially it is only good within the government. If you are already working within the government will having a CFPA change anything in regards to a promotion or moving up, probably not if you have your CMA. In my opinion it is not worth the time. I think the annual fee is 700 so if 2000 people get it. The government is shelling out 1.4 million in annual fees. The government always pays.

is there anyone on here that does have CMA-CPFA dual designation? How has it helped you or was it a complete dud and not worth it? I am trying to decide if I should go this route or just do the CMA program itself.

they only implemented the reciprocity agreement for CPFA about a year or so ago. you'll be hard-pressed to find anyone with the designation, let alone stories of people leveraging it for a promotion.
