View Full Version : How to improve appearance of a scar

I've had a scar on my left cheek ever since I was little (a freak accident). Over time it has improved, but still not to the point where I'm completely happy with it. What I'm looking for is advice on how to improve its appearance surgically. I have tried "natural" treatments such as bio oils, vitamin E, etc. but found that they do not do a very good job. Are there any people here who have done something like a laser surgery/resurfacing and could share their experience? Pros/cons as well as recovery time and costs. Anything on the subject will be helpful. Of course I have done an extensive research online, but I'd like to hear about first hand experiences if possible.

Thanks.

Microdermabrasion.

But seriously...I agree with the previous poster, scars are often a great feature, a fashion accessory that just can't be 'bought' with a credit card. Lots of guys dig an odd surgical scar or patched up dog bite on their girls...

Eh, I certainly do not share your sentiments when looking at myself in the mirror.

I'm going to look into microdermabrasion, thanks!

Go to the gym and get jacked. No one will notice.

yeah, dermabrasion is the procedure done under anasthesia by a medical professional. microdermabrasion is what's done at spa's.

I've heard something about chemical peeling from my dermatologist, but it apparently only works with light scars. I don't know if it is expensive or not.

Yeah, my scar is quite deep, but not very large. I actually have three poke 'craters' where nails pieced my flesh, all very close to one another.

Cocoa butter will soften up the scar tissue. Then again, I don't have "craters". I just have a long gash across my forehead. Most people don't even notice it anymore, although it does turn a bit purple if I'm out in the cold.

I don't think you can ever get rid of the scar but you can reduce the size (length, width, depth) using laser.

how bad could it be? If Seal can get Heidi Klum, a small scar on your cheek isn't the end of the world.

I've got a scar as well, but luckly it's over my left brow, so it's relatively unnoticeable.

The best way to improve the appearance of a scar is to build a hot lady around it. Like this:

It's near impossible to get rid of it completely. It's been a while since I looked through it all after I got myself a scar playing hockey (no, seriously, I was...it's just not what I tell people) so I may have forgotten something or things may have changed.

Talk to your doctor, he/she may be able to recommend something.

What's wrong with scars on the face?

Well....he's also an awesome singer and has a hot body! ;)

Anyway, who cares if someone else has scars and doesn't worry about them? OP, if you want to do something about your scar, go for it. I have a scar on my arm that I hate so I sympathize. Why don't you book an appointment with a good plastic surgeon and get an opinion on what they can do? I think almost any plastic surgeon will give a free consult. In my case, they weren't able to do anything with my scar. One doctor referred me to a place that specializes in 'permanent makeup' -- essentially makeup that is tatooed on your face (!!) I know, weird!!! Anyway, one thing that this woman does is to treat scars by putting small amounts of pigment to make the scar blend in more with the rest of your skin. I know it sounds weird but she's supposed to be quite well known for this and you can read about it here: http://www.permanentmakeup.ca/para_medical.html Look under "Paramedical micro pigment implantation" on the menu. I just got a so-so result but I think others work better depending on the type of scar and the location.

BTW, things like vitamin E oil will do nothing for an old scar. It's only good for a recent scar.

tell ppl you got it from a brawl and not the truth that you cut yourself running with scissors when you were little.

I do have a brawl scar on my foot when someone stapled me to the floor with a hunting knife. :)

Thanks for all of your comments/suggestions people, they're much appreciated.

tea tree oil, it smells a bit but my brother in law used it when he got his thyroid removed. Been 2yrs, you'd never even know.

Rosehip oil I hear can diminish the color of scars, and also is excellent as a moisteriser for the rest of the face.

It is difficult to find a source in Canada though.

Agree. Do nothing and work on your confidence. Chances are that even if you did get this surgically corrected, you will simply find something else about yourself to pick on.

The one good thing about getting older is that pretty soon you won't care what anyone thinks. And when you get really, really old you'll then discover that no one cared in the first place. :-0
