These range hoods look nice and have some nice savings. But not sure why most of the range hoods in HD etc tend to be low in CFM. Most Chinese and Japanese brands tend to be anywhere 550-800CFM and cost $300-800 depending on brand, style and CFM. I guess its the cooking style maybe. Some of the brands have pretty good claim of warranty too but they certainly don't look this fancy :)

Slightly off topic. How do you choose a range hood? Also, what measurement do you need to pick one that fit your kitchen?

Just a heads up that a lot of them don't come with a blower which a couple hundred bucks. Still an excellent deal as I paid about $380 for mine and another $300 or so for the blower last year.

I have purchased (and installed myself) a Taiwan brand range hood to replace a builder installed Broan branded range hood. The $40 ones you see at Home depot right now.

I know the width is mostly 36 inch (depth vary depending on how much coverage u want) If you have kitchen cabinet in between, get a measuring tape to take the dimension.

The higher the CFM, the better the suction power (generally louder)

Make sure you air vent connector is 16inch in diameter, or else you will need an adapter 8->16 inch. Also, you CFM will reduce slightly as a result of your smaller vent.

Depending on what type of cooking do you do? If you do a lot of stir fry, deep frying, cooking w/ strong aroma, fish frying. You definitely want to consider higher CFM models.;)

we have a Sakura 767.

http://www.sakura-canada.com/sakura%20products.html

they seem to have boeing model numbers:razz:

twin fans sucking out pretty much everything.
there is a place on Sheppard & Midland (T.O) i think that sells these stuff. we paid about $400 a few years back.

you need a 6" duct. dont install this with a 4" duct as the vortex created by the fan trying to extract everything through a 4"duct is disastrous as we found out.

Yeah Sakura, everylittlecent is right. That is the more famous Asian brand and made in Japan (supposedly?) and usually the preferred choice. I ended up getting a Chinese brand (can't remember the brand but will look it up when I get home) as it was barely $400 on special but pushed 800CFM and had selfcleaning feature. It "sucks" pretty good, is loud but I rather deal withe noise than the smell after I am done cooking hours ago. It was not the latest model so not as attractive and plain white. I think SS would have been $150 more. I can't remember. I even installed it myself saving another $60 in installation but only recommend you to do that if you are "handier" with lots of tools to spare.
As for location they have a store on Kennedy just south of Steeles on the east side. Also they are selling in most Chinese malls and look for specials and always bargain! I found out only after that friend of my wifes somehow got the latest model for almost my price since they knew someone!

oooops...i think u are right.
I did it like 2 years. I have a 5 year old house, the thing just fit right in. The sales keep reiterating old houses needed an adapter.

has anyone done a comparison between the broan and sakura. I have been thinking of replacing my builder installed range hood with a sakura for some time now and the best time might be now if the broan is way better than sakura (for the extra $$ it costs...)

I think you got a Pacifica...or Crown...both are OKAY at best...but still better than these regularly overpriced Broan crap...

If u want quality...go with Faber..

Thanks for this, OP! Exactly what I was looking for. (Wish one could search by size and colour.)

Does anyone know of an installer in the Ottawa/Gatineau region? I desperately need a good reliable handyman. I've called a couple around the Ottawa West area, but no one seems to want to work - they don't call back.

BM carries various up-scale range hoods and they have 3 years 0% interest plan
with no "admin fee"

This model has 650CFM ($500)
http://www.braultetmartineau.com/en/prod/1/appliances/6/cooking/00129306/range-hood/

Also check out hardware store in China town (Montreal / Toronto / Ottawa) for other models. You'll probably need 10" ducting vent to utilize these hoods (and reduce noise level)

That's great information - thanks! I never thought of Brault & Martineau for range hoods.

The range hood I liked at Home Depot didn't come with a blower....isn't that the point of buying a range hood? This is more complicated than I thought it would be LOL

Troi,

Its fairly simple if you have a 6" duct. remove the existing unit (its held by 4 or 5 screws) and the wires. Unit falls down. put the new unit in and connect the wires and attached the screws. having another pair of hands is always helpful.

The units also have a top (circular) and rear (rectangle) openings to fit the duct.

I got my fan from Tasco...we absolutely LOVE IT..

My dad and his friends smoke like a chimney and this exhaust fan managed to suck it ALL out..

I know this because my brother and I are highly allergic to tobacco...and it works wonders...I can even stand next to my dad while he smoke now...

Here is how I would rate these fan...but it's just me..based on personal experiences...

Faber > Sakura > Pacifica = Crown > Broan

Edit: Another interesting note - ALL of my dad's friends - SMOKERS :mad::mad::mad: - changed their exhaust fan to Faber after seeing ours...

I was excited until I found out they don't come with a blower. What's that all about? At a regular price of $1000+ I would expect the thing to come with the fan!!

Also, I can't find the blower portion on the home depot website anywhere. Do they not sell them?

I'm planning to replace my Broan with a Sakura and someone mentioned that the vent should be 6 inches. My vent is 4 inches but the opening is 8 by 4 inches (shaped like a furnace heat vent) and it's connected to a 4 inch vent. Will the Sakura still work or do I need to replace the entire length of the vent which would be too much trouble?

The sakura has 2 vents. One on top which is round (6" diameter) and One in the back which is rectangular i think is 4 * 8 so you should be okay. when you install it make sure the top vent is SHUT.

All the good stuff is sold out, except the hoods without the blower. Some of the chimney ones had the blower included.

My Sakura has very good suction but it is too noisy for me!
I cannot stand the noisy fans....How quiet is the Faber:?:
Any advice:?:
Thanks!

I may be a little biased...but I think the noise level on the Faber is almost unnoticeable when you put it on LOW...the only noise u will hear is the air moving...

At high speed...yes...you will hear the noise...but it's still much better than my old GE & Broan...I think the sonic rating is 0.8 at LOW and 3 on High...

To give you a better idea...most builder grade bathroom fan are about 4 to 5 sonic...so these are even more quiet than the bathroom fan.

I picked up a Broan range hood today in the Bay for $35 incl tax. We're not big users of our present one so don't need a pricey one by any means.

This is what we got:
